I don't know, threema had all this for a while now. hell, I don't even have to upload backups anywhere if I don't want to.
And since Facebook is known to not care about what they said yesterday, I wouldn't trust anything they claim, rightly... or not.

They can only read messages that a person in the chat has flagged though. While not great, there'd be nothing to stop someone in a truly private chat forwarding messages on to a company anyway, so while it's slightly easier here, it's fundamentally not much different.
