Apple's upcoming MacBook Pro models could have a notch on their display

16 October 2021
Apple's eagerly-anticipated MacBook Pro 14 and 16 models will allegedly have mini-LED displays with a cutout and more ports than before.

Never mind the notch, I'm far more intrigued by that bezel-less screen. It looks very... optimistic.

Article: According to RUMORS something COULD happen.

Readers: We are SURE that it DEFINITELY will happen and we already have an opinion on it.

    /facepalm

A god, 17 Oct 2021They could have made the bezels more thicker and not have a... moreNone of those companies wants to be Apple.

Samsung is the textbook definition of a conglomerate. They make everything from chips to ships.
Huawei has had the Kiss of Death.
Microsoft is within a hair's breath of Apple's market cap without any noteworthy hardware success.
Likewise Google and Amazon, both of whom are rapidly building formidable ecosystems.

Apple is a luxury company trying its hardest to extract every disposable penny from a 1-billion-person userbase.

So far, you've frantically chipped away at your credibility. Your baseless argument about the notch is incontrovertible evidence that you are out of your depth.

As early as 2014, Sharp was a trailblazer with its EDGEST design philosophy to eliminate bezels. The Aquos Crystal was one of its more worthwhile attempts. https://www.gsmarena.com/sharp_aquos_crystal-6590.php

Samsung's divisive curved screens, with the oddly similar EDGE branding, premiered in the same year as a counterpoint.

By early 2017, Samsung took the next big step by relocating the ubiquitous home button on the iconic S8, introducing the "Infinity Design" concept, and mainstreaming the 'Screen-to-Body Ratio' war.

Later that year, first with the Sharp Aquos S2 (Remember Sharp), and shortly after, the ill-fated but memorable Essential Phone; notches were introduced as a natural evolution in the industry-wide push to rid the smartphone of pesky bezels.

Not to be outdone, Apple yielded to the no-bezel and OLED crusade that had already become firmly entrenched in the industry. Their bathtub-styled notch housing Face ID was supposed to have the exact same effect on its peers as the embedded fingerprint scanner in the home button; but Samsung had other ideas.

In 2018, Samsung unveiled the refreshed "Infinity Design" roadmap. https://www.gsmarena.com/notches_are_coming_to_samsung_phones-news-34116.php. It was adopting Sharp and Essential's stopgap as Infinity U and Infinity V in its non-flagship models, inaugurating a revolutionary Infinity O punch hole design language in its flagship lines, both of which will eventually culminate in the "New Infinity" edgeless front panel design which they finally nailed 3 years later in the Z Fold 3 inner panel (after ZTE and co had beat them to commercialization).

Of course, and unsurprisingly, being the second-largest phone maker, Apple's bathtub notch had an immediate influence on impressionable brands. Who can forget the Pixel 3 XL abominable defacement? Or Huawei going the whole nine yards to outfit its flagships with a Face-ID-esque biometric system housed in an iPhone-styled notch?

However, as the gold standard of smartphone front panel design, Samsung took all that in stride, axed face biometrics, heralded its design paradigm as the industry de facto standard and in so doing put a resolute stop to the bathtub notch insanity.

Today, Samsung's "Infinity O" in flagships and "Infinity U and V" in non-flagships design language is used by virtually every brand not named Apple. Face biometrics is dead on devices not made by Apple. And everyone, including Apple, is undoubtedly aware of the final destination--under display components that do not detract from a fluidic, seamless edge-to-edge display.

Admittedly, Apple has a USP--its ecosystem. It could deck out the iPhones with four notches on all sides and 20% of its user base will buy it every year. Granted, a few shameless Chinese brands will mindlessly copy such dreadful design. In time, however, these outliers will realize the error of their choices and return to the logical, eminently more elegant design path refined by Samsung.

I do not dread Apple adding a notch to the MacBook. The XPS, Spectre, Thinkpad will not tarnish their esteemed legacies with that inexcusable, egregious, reviled blight. Samsung has already revealed the path forward in Laptop display tech called Blade Bezel -- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=is1cgWfUtLQ. It is the natural step up from the current best-in-class tri-bordered uniform svelte bezel display spearheaded by the XPS 13.

Consider this steely dressing down a requisite lecture to dissuade you from humiliating yourself any further as you had effortlessly done in your earlier replies. You're welcome.

At first, every other manufacturer will troll and mock Apple, and one year later, all of them will add notches to their laptop screens, too. Maybe they will call their cuts "waterdrops" instead of "notches" to pretend they somehow didn't just blindly copied it from Apple. That's how it always was, that's how it always will be.

Good luck with that garbage idea, cut more screens apple... that's a damn computer not a phone -_-

Gaming laptops will not get any punch hole or notch, because simply gamers want the full screen and won't buy anything like this..

Also i wanna say have fun fixing that apple macbook screen when you break it while opening the laptop, especially screen corners..

MiniLED may replace LCD at some point; but only when it is economical to outfit budget models. The premium lines will go with OLED. The industry had been waiting for Samsung to build capacity. Now that they have (to some degree), ASUS has already replaced LCD in their entire lineup with OLED.

MiniLED will forever remain a niche tech.

The switch to a miniLED display would be awesome news because it would force the industry to follow suit! I want a great HDR experience on laptops to become normal. 1000 nits and high dimming zone count would make that a reality since OLEDs for laptops still have a way to go.

My prediction: Everyone will complain loudly about the notch on the new MacBooks.

Six months later: Windows laptops with notches will appear in stores.

All these modern laptops, with everything soldered in on the mainboard, no matter how powerful they are, it would only be a nightmare, once you hear 3 beep when trying to turn it on ..

A notch is better than a bezel, just my opinion... but if it has a notch AND still some bezel, it's a poor design choice. let's see tomorrow.
