Sadly, the Pixel 6 Pro camera seems to suffer from huge issues currently. It often chooses 4.3x digital zoom from the 12.5 megapixel main camera instead of the 4.3x periscope camera, even though the light conditions are good and even though the periscope camera has a larger entrance pupil diameter, which gathers more light from objects than the main camera.
When it does choose the periscope camera (same scene, same light conditions), the result is much, much better.
Google also seems to ignore the 50 megapixel and 48 megapixel modes of the sensors and uses the 12 megapixel modes for digital zoom. Disappointing,
phones like the Xiaomi 11 Ultra, Huawei Mate 40 Pro or even the Asus Zenfone 8 are able to leverage the Quad Bayer resolution in order to achieve a better digital zoom.
And the Huawei Honor View 20 could take decent 48 megapixel photos in its Ultra Clarity mode.
