The example given is very good one because a phone that is selling relatively good can get a custom roms even if the chip is not a SD.
I bet that even Unisoc chips will get custom roms if they deliver a good number.

Ah, sh*t! Here we go again!

Let's bet how many variants this time. 20?

Then the prices will be higher in India with xiaomi branding rather than redmi branding

I'm from India and India is a huge, huge market for any brand. The competition among brands in different price segments is cut throat. Most of the sales happen in the entry level and mid range segment. Redmi/Poco is dominant in this segment.

Anonymous, 29 Oct 2021People who claim there are no custom roms for MediaTek chip... moreCongratulations, you found the exception. Should we consider now snapdragon socs that support anything from the redmi go to the mi 12 ultra? One or two hyper popular mtks get custom rom support and the rest are left to rot, the majority. Meanwhile on SD you are practically guaranteed to get it if you want this kind of thing, regardless of your phone's position in the market.

Anonymous, 29 Oct 2021People who claim there are no custom roms for MediaTek chip... moreall of them are trash and unstable
chip company most release a custom type of kernel, Qualcomm calls it CAF
but MediaTek easily don't releases any
and custom ROMs based on miui.eu kernel and hardly work on other aosp, cuz lack of customizing kernel
plus bring another MediaTek device with custom rom and gcam
Redmi note 8 pro is basically on top 5 of Xiaomi's most popular phones
