Google releases Fingerprint Calibration tool for the Pixel 6 to help with repairs

03 November 2021
Similar to the iPhone, the fingerprint reader on the new Pixels is tied to the motherboard, so replacing it is tricky business.

I also failed to install. Probably need the original fingerprint. Hopefully Google will do something about it.

I followed this procedure, but when the software starts downloading, it says "couldn't find the unique software for this device" and stops the download process. Has anyone managed to successfully complete this?

Locking hardware to the motherboard should be only for security purposes like fingerprint scanners and face id.

Screen, battery, camera etc should not be tied to the motherboard.
Because a Chinese device can bypass it. And it also serves no purposes.

But if they are locking for anti-theft reasons then the user should be in control i.e., the user can lock and unlock those hardwares at any time even from remote using his id. And no Chinese device should bypass it.

In that way, even the parts can't be used in other phones from a stolen phone.

More tat manufactured on a budget, and sold at a premium. But people lap it up, and are willing to 'beta test' said hardware into the bargain too. Thus saving the companies even more money...

This actually makes sense. Google isn't trying to cripple its phones / one's right to repair like Apple does. They're just trying to protect users from HW hacks, which is why the fingerprint reader is the only component tied to mainboard.
