max123, 07 Jan 2022Hello. A little bit offtopic - from your developer experie... moreUp until now, it was Nokia, Google, and Oneplus who were updating their devices in time (though only Google was doing it monthly and in schedule). But Nokia delayed many updates and Oneplus merged itself with ColorOS which makes merging commits from Google to their branches and updating the firmware slower than before. And also, if you want better developer support, you should not choose Mediatek chipsets (as with 1+ Nord members) because there is only a little support to them because of different architecture. All in all, if you want a cheaper phone with longer support - choose either the Samsung A5/A7 series or Google A series.

I am not sure about Samsung A1/A2/A3/A4 series update support, but A5 (A50/A51/A52/A52s) support is for now going on quite good - both A50 (android 9) and a51 (android 10) were updated to android 11 in last year. Let's see how they will update to android 12. The only problem with Samsung is that they are lagging A LOT. With alpha releases of android 12 in February, beta ones in April, and stable ones in August, September, and October 2021 - Samsung STARTED to update their phones only after October. This means flagship ones got a buggy update at the end of December and a new update came to fix that bug in early January - when all google phones were using stable android 12 for more than 5 months.

All Google devices for sure will get monthly security updates and at least 3-year Android version updates. E.g. my pixel 3a XL went from android 9 to android 12 with the first android 12 betas available in April 2021 to my device (whereas Samsung a series are still on android 11 and "scheduled" for updates - as in when alpha and beta versions of android 13 are available Samsung a series will still be receiving android 12 as if it is a new update). It also got android 12L the previous December but probably will not get android 13.

IMHO, if we were in 2012-18 I wouldn't care less about what does manufacturer do. I would buy a cheap phone and work myself into updating the firmware myself (e.g. my old Samsung galaxy note 3 from 2014 that had ONLY ONE android update from KitKat 4.4.1 to Lollipop 5.0.1 in 2015 will soon receive android 12 AOSP update. The only problem in 2018-2020 was to use magisk when you have non-official ROM to get security checkup for e.g. banking apps and so on. But since 2020 we also lost magisk support - which means non official ROMs are not getting passed for security anymore. So you need to wait for manufacturers like Samsung to release android 12 update to your device before android 14 is worldwide available.

A little bit offtopic - from your developer experience, what company offers the most updates for cheaper phones?
I'm looking for a phone cheaper than the Samsung S&A series, but with good updates.
    Thanks.

ElioX, 17 Nov 2021You dont understand. Samsung cares about flagship (S "... moreThe new update has tons of glitches and the new camera update is trash. My pictures look like shit now. It doesn't matter how big the cameras are on the phones now, the updates bring horrible image processing down the line. I would think they would make their camera system better over time but nah they choose to force upgrades on their consumers. My s21 ultra refresh rate is running at 60 hz and I can't understand it. Some links are broken within apps like Facebook and Instagram click through links show blank pages and this deff not an acceptable update. Apps are constantly crashing. I can't believe how damaged the camera system has become. They use to have the best camera and I know it made huge files of photos and videos but why and the hell did they mess it up.... it's looks like the crap.

kek, 15 Nov 2021That's the point of Knox. It alerts you when someone h... moreDid you ever root your phone or installed a custom recovery?

That is what we, android developers need, when android terminal is not enough.

Once you root your device this triggers KNOX from 0x0 to 0x1, which is IRREVERSIBLE. Which means no matter how many times you reflash stock firmware or reset your device, it willl never be allegible for repair as per Samsung, it will not be secure for any exchange email app, and it will also not work with Banking apps - unless you use magisk and hide root (which requires a monthly/weekly updates and can require 10-15 days to find workaround for new triggers). But KNOX is irreversible. So there is no way to go back to 0x0 and you have to use rooted phone if you want to use secure apps.

Does it make sense to you? It doesn't. No other device manufacturer has this flaw. Only Samsung.

notafanboy, 15 Nov 2021You're complaining for the sake of complaining, and yo... moreYou are just proving my point that Samsung updates ONLY flagships and not the rest (more than 75% of their phones). You have THE MOST EXPENSIVE samsung device. And till 5 years ago, Samsung also left the flagships with only one year update. Now they do the same with other variants (J series, M series, Some A series, Prime series, Z series). They just don't update because they want those people to buy new devices.

Different than Google, who keeps updating all their phones at least 3 years be it A series or flagship series.

If you still think that is not true, then you are a plain fanboy. Sorry for you. You need to read and investigate before you conclude that S21 Ultra is same as every other phone that Samsung has released.
