Huawei's upcoming flip phone to feature a new, simpler hinge

It's supposed to be more reliable and cheaper to make.

I pointed out one area where Huawei's device is superior to Samsung's Fold, which is the way the hinge handles the screen. This has nothing to do with Huawei in particular. The pocket hinge was introduced by Motorola. Huawei was simply the only other manufacturer that improved on that design and used it in a phone/tablet design. That doesn't mean they have a superior Foldable phone. It means they have a better hinge design.

I repeat. The pocket hinge/tear drop design allows the phone to fold tighter than Samsung's Fold and the screen has a more subtle crease because of that design. If you are not going to argue against that, then there is no need for us to discuss this. I guess you actually prefer the gap, a screen with a crease and you don't believe Samsung should continue to refine the design because it is perfect the way it is.

Huawei can't better what Samsung makes, which is why they cancelled everything when Samsung announced the Flip3. It's impossible for them to undercut the Flip3, even with the billions in state funding they're getting. That is how good this phone is. TCL dumped hundreds of thousands plastic foldables in a landfill the day the Flip3 was announced. MrMobile on Youtube got to have one of those plastic fantastic disaster phones for a few days as they thought they were getting ready to destroy Samsung with a "budget" plastic phone.

That would only make a slight difference IMO. The X2 handles the screen differently than the Fold. The hinge creates a pocket. The screen sits in the pocket as a tear drop. That's why the X2 has a more subtle crease than the Fold and Flip. I prefer that design and I think the affect is evident. Not only does it allow the panels to Fold closer (not completely flat), it is less harsh on the screen.

I'm not married to the tear drop hinge. I'm married to the current reality. You can either Fold the screen like a book as Samsung has done or you can loop it like Motorola has. I believe the loop approach is better and I think Samsung could improve it even more.

I wonder how simple it is going to be. Forget Motorola's RAZR 5G seamless hinge solution, even Samsung's Galaxy Z Flip3 hinge is far from simple and it looks way too generic compared to the Motorola.

I hope Honor will get this design because there are rumors that Huawei would sell its designs to other phone oems.

PepperPot, 29 Nov 2021My position on this has not changed since Motorola introduc... moreThe reason the Huawei looked like it was folding flat was because it has a frigging thick rim around the display. Look closer and you'll notice that Samsung's screen protecting rim around the display is a lot thinner. You can see how thick that plastic rim is here:

                            https://cdn57.androidauthority.net/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/Huawei-Mate-X2-top-edge-in-hand.jpg

The display Huawei used is a Samsung display, and that's the thing limiting how tight it can be folded, not the hinge. If you fold it tighter the crease will take damage.
I definitely prefer the Samsung way, as it doesn't leave a chonky border around the display when I actually use it, just to create an illusion of it folding tighter.

It's built l... moreMy position on this has not changed since Motorola introduced the tear drop hinge Huawei adapted. The X2 has a more compact hinge mechanism that allows their phone to fold flat. My guess is they are using a similar design on this phone. I want that hinge on the Fold. You can keep everything else. It couldn't hurt the Flip either.

I felt that way when I had the 1st Fold and I feel the same way with the 3rd one. I want the Fold to be as pocketable as it can be and since they can't Fold the screen at a 0 degree angle yet, the tear drop hinge is the only way that is happening.

The more clamshells, the better. I still won't be interested in this device because Huawei won't be using Snapdragon which is better for emulation. I'm pretty much married to my Flip 3 for the next 3 years paying off the 36-month financing and I'm good with that because Flip 3 rocks playing GameCube smoothly.

What I really want are phones that look like the GPD Win 2 and MOQi I7s. The Win 2 is something I wish Microsoft got into instead of wasting their time and resources with the Surface Duo series. I'd love to see pocketable Windows PCs with phone functionality.

The MOQi I7s looks like a giant PS Vita but actually works like an Android smartphone albeit stuck on Oreo and a Snapdragon 710. It's really the spiritual successor to the Xperia Play. I would love to see a successor to this but be way more compact. They cost about $400 or less.

If the GPD Win 3 was only $400, I'd get that over the Steam Deck and ONEXPLAYER. The Win 3 has a nice size but isn't a clamshell like the Win 1 and 2 are. The MOQi I7s is way too large to carry around and too weak to run GameCube smoothly.
