2021 Winners and losers: Xiaomi

27 December 2021
It has been a productive year for Xiaomi – it launched over 50 phones and a bunch of other devices.

I bought a Redmi Note 8 Pro after extensive research. It proved excellent in every way -- remarkable value for money. Alas, after I had had it for nearly a year it acquired the habit of suddenly rebooting with no apparent reason. Xiaomi offered little help, telling me I would need to reset to factory settings. I discovered it was a common fault with this model. After 18 months I could stand it no more. I have replaced it with a more expensive, but reliable Samsung. I would like to sell my Redmi, but nobody is interested in buying that make. Very disappointing., as on the whole it has been brilliant.

AnonD-731363, 27 Dec 2021No man its not a must its a costly gimmick. If i exclude ... moreGood luck making for $500 phone with 4K HDR oled (made by samsung), 1" exmor with DRAM, gorilla victus, usb 3.2, integrated ddr5/ufs3.1, bionz X chip and other stuff.
Even bill of materials of iphone 13 pro is over $500.

Xperia has ZERO components made by chinese companies. Xperia is not assembled in China. This increases prices.
Xperia has software created and polished by people from Alpha, from CineAlta, from Sony Pictures and Sony Music. It is nothing cheap.

Do not compare to chinese phones that have over 70% of local components that do not pay import taxes. Phones assembled in China, which is cheaper.

Look at financial data from xiaomi. Selling phones is main revenue.
Xiaomi claims 75% of sales are devices cheaper than $350.
Judging the money made out of phones, no way your beloved Xiaomi makes less than 50% per unit.
No way a phone sold for $450 costed more than half to be made.

Remember than midrange Mi Note 10 in 2019 sold in Europe for 580 euros? Do you still think this device costed like 500 euros to be made?

Anonymous, 27 Dec 2021Oh look at this rich folk... Bruh, not everyone has money t... moreOh look at this comment assuming everyone should buy a iPhone.

        NO!

Manufacturers can make a less specced phone for a fair price WITHOUT ADS.

And it wasn't that long ago they did, it's just now that they created this trend of over speccing a phone at a price.

Read my comment correctly before you assume stuff.

Loser : no xiaomi phone has USB 3 and USB-C to HDMI support (even 1200€ xiaomi mi 11 ultra has USB 2.0)

For me, the Mi 11 Lite 5G is also a winner. I'm really happy about it.

I got Redmi note 10 pro ,the hardware is pretty impressive given the price ,lovely screen ,good camera , excellent battery but badly let down by Miui , inconsistencies and glitches in the software ruined the experience.
I also had a 11t pro for a little bit ,Miui on that was much better overall on that but still had some issues but if the thing is miui should as good experience on the note 10 pro as it is on the 11t pro , obviously there's a few features missing but consistency should be about the same across all devices ,not 2 levels apart

Anonymous, 27 Dec 2021I see a lot of people around bashing MIUI while Samsung has... moreThe problem people find with the miui is that they are use to with there old phone ui so as a dumb user they need to complain when there usual things dont work and needs tweaking but that tweaking hard work and too complicated for them so it's easy to blame the miui for that.

Also these people read a lot of the yellow news made by trolls so they are like broken record player trolling the same thing in everywhere for years

I see a lot of people around bashing MIUI while Samsung has a lot of bugs, updates reversed or dumped. Only to remember that S21 ultra was an epic adventure of failures. Same with Oneplus, apple etc... and the all mighty Google. There's almost zero days without a complaint about the UI of these brands, but, somehow everybody forgets.

If i exclude everything a flagship phone doesnt need at all i can make a flagship grade device for 500 with specs equakl to Sony Xperia Pro - 1 plus Samsung S21 Ultra 5G equivalent and will not cost more than 700 brand new phone.

Bruh, not everyone has money to buy the latest iPhone or get the most expensive LG OLED TV. Trust me, everybody would like to own a luxury yacht filled with the best, most high end stuff. But fr, do you think everyone has enough money to get an iPhone 13 Pro Max with 1TB of storage? Of course the answer is no. Also you could bring up the argument of the iPhone SE. That garbage of a phone has a horrible screen, bad battery and mediocre cameras at best just like lets say Poco F3, and it's more expensive, yay. Now SE in its core isn't bad, just overpriced for what it is. Like budget mf phones have amazing battery life which is way more important in a phone than having a beautiful thin design that you can't even admire cause you just slap a case on the phone. Fact is, getting an older flagship just cause its "premium" isn't worth it for most folks cause those used phones have worse battery life than the new ones. And the F3 answers everything a 300e phone should be. Yes the ads might be annoying, but if you're really tech savvy you could always slap a custom rom onto it and go on with your life (not like Samsung and bloody Knox). Also 99% of those ads could be disabled. So in all honesty I really don't see a problem in getting cheaper stuff for rest of the world. If you feel like a 1%, okay, get the latest iPhone. We won't judge you like you judge folks that don't want to spend a small fortune on something that will be hella outdated in a few years. And I can bet the F3 will last the same amount of time as the latest iPhone (also when the iPhone stops receiving updates, you won't be able to download new apps, issue that Android doesn't have).

No matter the price, just make the specs worse instead than overspecc a phone for the price, sell at almost no margin but put ads in them.

And I have same opinion about smartphone games and apps, instead of filling them with microtransactions and ads let people actually buy it.
