Samsung seems to be having trouble with yield.

Anonymous, 07 Dec 2021If most of us here are saying that Samsung foundries sucks ... moreSamsung makes mostvof 6xx and 7xx series.
None says they are power hungry nor hot.

How about focus on other areas instead of making chips more powerful just because of stupid games?

888 was pushed a bit too far in it's design otherwise it would have somewhat better efficiency. probably qualcomm wanted it to perform like Apple latest A iterations. Production processes are something else and they do not make a design suddenly be noticable worse or better.

Well, here's to hoping you get a SD8 Gen1 made at TMSC! Performance, battery, and thermals will be much better!

Just analyze, most heat problems on current and previous chips and other flaws are Samsung's fault. Qualcomm might not wanted to go to TSMC at first because they were charging more.
You might say that Samsung EUV process is way ahead or better than TSMC but the reality has proven wrong, so next time I'm changing phone first thing I'm going to look is were is the Qualcomm chip being manufactured.

All of them are going to use 8gen1 from Samsung because the deal with TSMC is still only in discussion. You think the phone makers book their chipset a few weeks before production? They ordered months in advance.

Lots of people here don't know what they're talking about. The fact that they switched providers will not result in better/worse chips. You will not even notice a difference. It's a yield issue, not a chip design issue. Also, Samsung purposely decided to invest in more advanced nodes, so it is normal.

Anonymous, 07 Dec 2021Unbelievable they still haven't caught upto TSMC after... moreThey didn't invest in 5/4 nm on purpose, they knew that the nodes won't be good, the money went for the GAA transistors so no wonder why their nodes are worse then TSMC.

Anonymous, 07 Dec 2021People have this idea that Snapdragon 888 chipsets are hot ... moreWell the A77 2.4 GHz core on the snapdragon 865 consumes 1.4 watts of power vs the A78 2.4Ghz on the snapdragon 888 that consumes 1.64 watts of power. The X1 consumes 3 watts while the a77 consumes 1.8 watts at the same clock, so the higher the clock the more leakage. Samsung 5LPE has leakage problem. Also snapdragon doesn't put a lot of cache to save costs and also blocks the system cache to access the CPU cores for some reason, which makes the CPU less efficient.

What makes them think they will lead semiconductors in 2030?

AnonF-1013367, 07 Dec 2021The difference will be less throttling and longer battery life.People have this idea that Snapdragon 888 chipsets are hot because of Samsung fab process. It plays a very small part in it. The chip is just designed to run this way. Yields are not connected to how hot the chip is. They are related to how many actually perfectly functioning chips you get out of single waffer. If you get very few, it'll be very costly for Qualcomm and in return they'll have to sell them at higher price or have shortages and loss on their end. If you get many, it'll have steady supply with no or very little losses.

Good example is GeForce RTX 3000 series. They have insane performance and aren't particularly hot. They are fabbed by Samsung. Maybe on TSMC they'd have minor edge due to smaller node, but ultimately it's down to how chips are designed and not fab process by itself.

Translation : brands that plan to announce the 2022 flagships in 2021 just to claim to be first will end up with inferior chips compared to those phones announced after march 2022.

Congrats to Motorola and Xiaomi ...

It will be hard to manufacture same chip from 2 foundaries. Like u mentioned, it will cause issues.
So logical will be to make a few tweaks and launch it as a new Soc. That is most likely what will happen. So yeah sd 8 gen 1 plus variant , it is going to be and it will debut earlier this time, it seems.

The snapdragon 8 gen 1 is build on 4LPE which is not a big just from 5LPE, there will be enough yields for that nide, but the Exynos 2200 is build on 4LPP which is 16% more efficient then 5LPE and the yields will be low.
