Another amazing tech that could make camera on smartphones much better, mainly if combined with periscope, liquid lenses, flexible mirrors and most others, to finally have a potentially a single, do-it-all camera, like on compact cameras, who can goes from 24 (typical in the Smartphone Ultra-Wide) to 75 (typical 3x "zoom" on Smartphone's telephoto) continuously variable focal length (true zoom).
But that will be destroyed by haters before it even had the chance to reach the second gen, exactly like the pop-up selfies camera, that was BTW a mistake from Oppo to make the comparison, it is an open door to such "people".
Expect many BS about "durability", "waterproof/IP rating/dust/water", "moving parts", "wear", "fragile", "drop" and such, from people who would STATE it will have issues as if they were from the future and did know such things, despite not being able to extrapolate with pop-up selfie cameras who never had such issues.
And also from haters who will say BS about true zoom despite all compact cameras having it being extraordinarily good and only a single one made on a smartphone :

Despite such tech being literally the first even smartphone's periscope, in 2015, before the first prime (fixed focal length) "mainstream" one in Marsh 2019 in the Huawei P30 Pro and May 2019 on the Oppo Reno 5G, both showing amazing results and thanks to advance in technology having been shrunken down such that those two allowed a 5x zoom on a 8.4mm and 9.3mm thick phone respectively, perfectly within average smartphone's thickness, and without any camera bump.
All that from people who will make claims about a tech they've never experienced, have no idea how it will be made, how much space it would take, how good it would perform, nor who have any proper photography knowledge.
Sad, but true...

Anonymous, 07 Dec 2021Samsung already did this years ago No Samsung phone exists with this implementation of camera tech
Compare any side by side comparison and the glaring difference will scream at you that different technologies are being used

I'd like to see pop up return to the selfie cam. If Oppo can pull it off while retaining an IP rating, that would be the most simple form of innovation that makes sense.

I was waiting for a long time already for the day that phones would finally start using retracted lenses.

Oppo have often made efforts to release new quirky or improved products over the years, this looks like it has potential if it done properly, although I would rather smartphone manufacturers would focus on that 1" sensor next up, i would still take 1 lens if it had high end point and shoot level image quality, and yes it can be done, sony have already shown us the way, now its time to mass produce and improve on the existing tech

This can protect if phone falls down.
Variable focal length requires more space than this.
Also, then would not make sense to put label 50mm, instead of 25-50mm and call retractable instead of zoom.

This + liquid lenses that goes from 0.5 to 2x and periscope from 2x to 10x would be perfect camera.

Instead of wasting time and money on the back camera that doesn't need any of these useless gimmicks, they should worry about the FRONT camera which is still a problem with all these ugly notches and punch holes

I wish they revisited the Find X form-factor/design, still nothing quite like it imo. I wish I could buy one at a reasonable price!
