Oppo retractable camera prototype showcased at Inno Day 2021

14 December 2021
The fancy camera tech should trickle down to an Oppo phone eventually.

Nick Tegrataker, 15 Dec 2021Here's a question for you then: How hard is it for you... moreIt's become a habit on Gsmarena to bash any innovation in camera department on smartphones by comparing them to the absolute best professional cameras.
I don't understand why these guys are comparing consumer product to a product designed for professional purposes??

Alpha, 15 Dec 2021Theres literally NOTHING cool about a protruding camera, ge... moreThe hell is wrong with you. There's a reason DSLRs (or any other professional cameras for that matter) aren't 8mm thin. Longer lenses work better for a multitude of reasons.

The fact that you seem to be getting offended over this is beyond sad.

[deleted post]Well, there is a difference between legit or constructive criticism and negative criticisms.

*Criticizing that the market is flooded with the same punch hole, which, can't arguably be said to be an ideal solution, far from that, this is a legit, albeit non-constructive criticism.

*Criticizing the Pixel 4 for having ditched the fingerprint sensor (Huawei demonstrated well how both 3D face recognition and fingerprint scanner can be on the same phone) is a constructive criticism as we are saying what we would like to be changed.
Remember that all techs that are easy to ignore (don't cost too much and are totally passive and not impairing the user in any way if the smartphone have it or not, like an SD card slot, the 3.5mm Jack, 5Mp or more over 2Mp sensors, etc) should, in most cases, be the norm and their absence justified, mainly when there is a substantial number of user to those.

*But someone criticizing a phone for X or Y feature, as if it was the worse thing you could do to said person, why absolutely no one force said person to buy this phone, and this feature is clearly not bound to become market invasive like the punch hole.
Example : 3D face recognition, pop-up camera, continuous variable FL (zoom), slider phone, thinner, thicker, smaller, bigger phone, etc, this is what everyone does in the smartphone community.

If a brand decide to make a SINGLE model with a particular feature, why on earth would anyone complain about it if they are not forced to buy it, MAINLY if there are similar phones available without such feature?

Every other community, subject, market, etc, when discussing something they don't like, they either :
*Say why they prefer the alternative.
*Express why this isn't for them.

In the smartphone community, the most common answer is :
*I don't like this, and it doesn't conform to the established norm, therefor it shouldn't exist, even if there is a demand or even a need for it.

This is the ONLY community I've ever saw where, when you say you'd like X or Y unconventional feature on a phone, people jump on you as if you meant that it should be on all phones without exceptions.

In a sense, the Android community have it worse than Apple, Apple is almost more a philosophy than a brand, they do their stuff their own way and force no one to buy an Apple over an Android, granted, what they do is still awful, like removing the Jack, their implementation of the Notch (it should have been a bezel with display around the sensor for status icons and not a continuation of the main display, only a slight software difference but a HUGE end result difference) and other things, but they are a single brand following their own choice.
While on Android, we have a lot of brands, but all do the exact same thing except for Sony and some lesser brands, in fact, they release many series that are identical, which is often from rebranding.
Look at the cheer number of Samsung smartphones, yet, none in the past 2 years have anything other than a punch hole or a teardrop notch except for the absolute cheapest where it has been spared only to save money and on the Galaxy Xcover 5 who is its own thing.
Same for all brands, yet, the same things are everywhere, and so many are defending this as if having diversity (meaning, a bit of everything, so everyone can get what he wants, including them) would be bad.

So not accepting that ALL phones get bad things, sure, that's the spirit of not being a sheep, but not accepting that a SINGLE series get something just because the person don't like it, despite having absolutely no intents whatsoever to buy the phone had the feature not been in it?
Heck no, that's being an egoistic and egocentric person.

gimm, 16 Dec 2021you don't even need to buy a thousand dollar lense for... more3 problems with your logic:

        1. At the widest end, image quality from compact cameras is often significantly worse than high-end smartphones unless you get a model with a sensor larger than 1-inch. Dim lens hurts a lot especially when it comes to low light photography.
        2. Most of them don't provide image quality good enough for most professionals, and ones with a large sensor AND a zoom lens with a wide focal length range are rare and expensive.
        3. Even if these were decent enough for your usage, you would still need a phone to do everything else.

If carrying around a cheap phone + a compact camera was the objectively better solution, I guess most people would've gone through that route instead, which is clearly not the case in our society. I said a lot but honestly, I believe the 3rd one is the biggest reason why people just want a phone with a good camera.

          Interesting approach.

Oppo goes physical lens goes outward.
Sony goes telescopic lens move inside the chassis.

While Sony approach have advantages of less movable item outside chassis protection.
Oppo approach without using prism allows to use bigger sensor and get direct light without much mirroring first.

              TL;DR :
Who carries a pocket camera EVERYWHERE?
You are BOUND to miss some nice picture opportunities if you don't have it.
That's more portable than a DLSR and multiple lens, for sure, but still it isn't something you'll take for going to the grocery store or an appointment.
And if for you, quality wise, a compact camera is good enough compared to a big DSLR, then why a smartphone isn't good enough compared to a compact camera then?
Wanting a better camera on smartphone isn't an issue, what is an issue is how the lack of diversity impose to people the price range and camera type they have on their phones.

Anonymous, 15 Dec 2021You can buy a k30 pro zoom camera for $20 and replace it on... moreIt doesn't work that way, I wish it would.
But nope, some are currently trying to allow the camera from the K30 Pro Zoom to work on the regular K30 Pro and Poco F2 Pro, but it is not from ideal.
Not only there are issues, and you need to do a lot of manual work for getting this to work, you also don't have all features working properly (though now most does they processed well on this project), and on top of that, it replaces the Macro, not the 2Mp depth sensor, and I do like the Macro of the Poco F2 Pro.
                  https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/replace-poco-f2-camera-with-redmi-k30-pro-zoom-camera.4160691/

Blame that on how bad Android it, if only it could work the same way as Linux or Windows, using normal drivers, but nope, they had to do some stupid limiting hardware level code to OS.
Basically, on Android, each device have its own OS, imagine if you had to pick a specific Windows or Linux depending on each individual internal components of your computer...

automated retracting camera to protect it when phone fall is kinda useless, when the phone itself cannot survive the fall damage
