Flashback: Samsung Galaxy S6 got a lot of hate, but it also got many things right

19 December 2021
Samsung changed lanes - from the plastic, utilitarian Galaxy S5 to the sleek Galaxy S6 - and sacrificed multiple features to get there.

Apparently the S6 is already old enough for people to forget how stupid the phone thinness craze of 2014/2015 was.

Still remember that day when s6 edge launched. Everyone amazed by beautiful curve screen, metal bezels and metal back cover. Since then all samsung and the other brand flagships following use curve screen till now. But one major critic was no micro sd slot and samsung put it back on s7 series. And s7 edge are phenomenal by history.

KondriX, 19 Dec 2021As I said earlier, the whole mobile industry has took a wro... moreThe mobile industry has matured. Which is fancy business speak for stagnated.

It mirrors other "mature" tech like laptops. Newer chips (CPU and GPU) constitute the bulk of yearly upgrades. Everything else stays the same or becomes marginally worse. Look how long it took OEMs to reduce bezels to make devices more compact.

Back to mobiles, the S6 had a 1440 x 2560 resolution. The S21 has 1080 x 2400 resolution. In fact, the S6 will have comparable or slightly worse resolution as the yet unannounced S22 Note/Ultra that'd be twice as expensive.

As you correctly specified, we're been fed the chip efficiency/performance line as the most meaningful upgrade like the computer manufacturers do while everything else stays the same or gets nerfed. This is what happens when tech matures and is commoditized. It becomes a money grab!

"Despite several unpopular changes, the Galaxy S6 series did represent an upgrade over the Galaxy S5. Its Super AMOLED screen was bumped up to 1440p resolution (the S5 was criticized for sticking with 1080p). The curved sides made for an eye-catching design too."

Why did people criticized S5 for 1080p at that time? Even Iphone at that time was 326 PPI

As I said earlier, the whole mobile industry has took a wrong direction in the last few years. They have sealed the batteries, are REMOVING features like SD card, audio jack, notification LED, FM Radio, Xenon flash and introducing stupid new ones like RAM extension, punch-holes, 2 Mp cameras, no charger while the prices are going up every year. All we hear is that the efficiency and optimization has increased 20-30% every year when in reality it hardly makes a difference. And the most interesting fact is where are people who keep defending all these companies, sadly.

There is so much more that can be said abouts S6 series. It was the one that skipped the dreaded snapdragon 810, the days of exynos glory.

There was a huge jump in camera performance, puting Samsung at the forefront of all the competitors.

Phone looked real nice in person. But i still prefered the S6 active, that one got a bigger battery and a nice rugged design that i like to this date. Too bad it has also stripped the finger print scanner and the capacitive buttons. At least the battery was way bigger and Exynos ran way better than Snapdragon back then. 🤔

Best S series smartphone of its time was S10 according to me. It got everything right. It had features even s21 is missing.

                              back when Samsung was innovative

GSMA should do an article on the Galaxy S2. I remember buying a massive custom battery for it that more than doubled the width of it. There were dozens of ROMs available for it, including SuperNexus. Such fun.

The time when Exynos is still ahead of Snapdragon, what a moment.

The S7 is what corrected the mistakes of the S6's smaller battery. The Note 5 released the same year of the S6 is what messed up the Note line before the Note 7 torched it.

Let's just say 2015 wasn't exactly a great year in mobile thanks to Snapdragon 810 and the LG G4/V10's bootloops.
