iQOO previously announced that the iQOO 9 series will feature a 50MP Samsung GN5 camera.

No wonder the quality is awful. It's the same sensor that's on the Redmi 10. And look at the poor quality photos that phone produces. The sensor size is tiny.

hmm, this fisheye something is very new for me, a non-photo-experienced user. How is this feature well to be used for? The photo sample seems not so impressive photos to the hype, in my opinion.
The landscape photo is maybe one of the effective scenes to cap'ed with fisheye... what do you guys think?

The ultra-wide-angle lens in Huawei Mate 40 phones, thanks to the introduction of free-form surfaces. The image quality of the lens is very high, the optical distortion of the system is notably less, without the need to go through software distortion correction can be obtained without distortion of high-definition images, due to the required to correct the distortion, users can get and display the high-definition photos taken faster. It can achieve ultra-wide-angle lens distortion-free HD high-resolution video output, the ultra-wide-angle lens of other mobile phones due to the existence of optical distortion, shooting ultra-wide-angle HD video, can not real-time software to correct the video distortion and make the output video with obvious distortion. “This is a perfect link between research and engineering,” Dr. Changlun Hou said."

Unlike traditional spherical and aspheric optics, optical-free-form surfaces are non-axisymmetric, irregular, and complex. By introducing freeform surfaces in an optical system, the optical system can be made more compact, lighter in weight, and have fewer optical-elements; and it can better correct the aberration of the optical system and improve the imaging quality. Smartphones have a broad market, which makes it possible for high-end devices to use cutting-edge optical components to enhance the user’s photographic experience."

It was a nice time owning lg g5, a whole new perspective. Poped a gcam app on it and it was a great camera, don't get me wrong every "wide angle" nowadays takes better photos but they are not really wide. I rather gram my GP with a shitty senzor and have a ultrawide then try to made a good ultrawide with oneplus

Free form lems is not a solution and there is no difference between using len itself or using software post editing to mitigate the distortion. Both are the exactly same thing in terms of redirecting the light.
Speaking of distortion, they both tackle only one kind of distortion, that is angular distortion. They temp to make lines straight. But this means that areas and shapes are totally fxxked up by that.
You can just look at the world map. That is totally WRONG. The South Pole is big as hell and that is not true.
This is all about projection and distortion.
Besides that, freeform lens is actually aspheric lens, not asymmetric lens. Aspheric lens is everywhere including the glasses you are wearing, FF camera lens, microscopic, etc. It is a super old tech.

Most of the 18mm camera has very good distortion correction.

P C M, 02 Jan 2022Give this one some credit.. Your Huawei has narrow field of view.if you really wanted to say that huawei has a bad ultra-wide camera, you would have tried to refute my argument about distortion correction. instead, you started a hare and talked about a relatively small field of view. there are aspects for and against, if you want physical distortion correction, which is quiet rare in the smartphone market, you get the huawei mate 40 pro, if you want as much field of view as possible and don't care about physical distortion, so that softwae processing can satisfy your needs, then you buy another one. but with such rude comments you only admit that you're prejudiced against huawei or you are jealous that huawei has freeform lens for physical distortion correction but other brands don't.

If lems has zero dos... moreit has a freeform lens and corrects the distortion a lot. i didn't say it's perfect, you can't totally abolish distortion, there is always going to be some difference to the real environment, but it's still much better to have a lens which does this instead of some software because when a lens does the work, you can be sure that the distortion correction is real and you get a natural image. if the software does it, then you will always know that it's a post-processed image and not a real one directly shot by your hardware.

Those samples are no way 150 degree. 110 at most.
My 3 years experience on LG G5 (140 degree) told me that it should be 2 times wider the FOV if is it truely a 150 degree lens.

I bought the IQOO Z5 recently and it's Wide Angle Camera is CATASTROPHICALLY bad!
It can only take purely ok photos in very good light, anything else and it's abominal!
It's absolutely unusable in dawn/dusk/night - even with night mode turned on.
