Jimbob, 07 Jan 2022Its pretty hideous but I like the idea of having a mini com... moreBecause last time MS tried to (re)enter the smartphone (OS) them damn Linux Loonie FOSS hippies were literally _all over_ the internet in a concerted viral (anti)marketing campaign warning the internet population of the imminent apocalyptic danger of "ZOMG M$ is at it again with their attempt at a monopoly in the smartphone (OS) market", while touting the blessings of a (decreasingly less free, but let's sweep that under the rug :'') ) smartphone OS//platform called Android with increasingly more and more nasty licence strings attached as time progressed. With every revision of the Android OS, Google Play Store and respective license, more and more restrictions were imposed on GSM manufacturers implementing the Android OS on their devices, and more AOSP APIs were being locked up by transferring them into the Google propietary version. Oh and let's not forget there was and still is that other phone manufacturer, you know the number 2 called Apple, with 10 to 20% of the smartphone market pie, who somehow always got left out of the anti monopoly argument. But, for MS to conquer and monopolize that market they'd still have to surpass Apple's market percentage, and by a good margin at that. Which never never would have been likely to begin with ever since the first iPhones completely turned the smartphone market upside down. From that moment, the market has been flooded with the monocultural monoblocks, and experiments with other smartphone form factors are few and far in between. The last few years we see some more clamshells or flip phones and foldables.

Anonymous, 09 Jan 2022That price for a Deminsity 800 is just too much, keyboard o... moreit was supposed to be a dimensity 1000 but mediatek screwed them.
The whole platform was designed around the 1000 and right before it went into production mediatek changed their minds and told planet they couldn't have the 1000. Most likely a much bigger company wanted exclusivity so mediatek broke their agreement with planet and consequently the 800 was a last minute substitute.

YUKI93, 07 Jan 2022Future of this form factor is folding tablets? I so doubt t... morefoldables are "still" far from practical as you said.but, their sales are growing exponentially every year and more manufacturers are into it every year.UI and app compatibility, durability, battery life and price are still drawbacks because this is a new tech. being an early adopter have its price.that is normal.if a foldable tablet costs %10-15 more than a similar spec flagship, people may choose them instead of buying an additional tablet. laptop market is going in the same direction.lenovo launched one already(X1 fold) and we will see at least 3 additional foldable laptops in 2022.

Anonymous, 07 Jan 2022another useless phoneAnother useless comment.
If anything out there is "useless" it would be all these slabs that look the same aside from the camera bump and provide essentially the same exact experience.

That's purely an act of bravery. Look at those established giants, they don't dare bring such ideas these days. Last was Moto Z modular.

Super expensive fragile f... moreHaving got a costly expensive folding phone, don't knock it till you've tried it. They're not flimsy at all. Quite the opposite in fact. Watching a video of someone purposefully destroy them, isn't a true test. Its fin to watch but in reality are you gonna bend it? burn it or take a knife to it? No.
Ive literally dropped mine down the stairs by accident and it survive. There is no damage to the structural integrity and its deffo not flimsy. Yeah the inside screen is softer but unless you're actually going out your way to damage it, it wont get damaged at all.

If Samsung or Sony would make something like this with the SD card slot, the 3.5mm jack and WQHD+ display , I'd instantly buy it!

Why dont every phone put the battery on a hinge like a folder/clam style and call it a day. The phones will be thinner, batttery replaceable and will take care of heating issues, protect the screen when closed.

I really would love an up to date keyboard slider.
It's crazy how those are full on key caps not just buttons. At least by design.

BusyHarp, 07 Jan 2022They should bring back a phone like Nokia Communicator E90,... moreI had the Nokia Communicator E90 years ago and now have the Astro Slide 5G on pre-order. This will be better than the E90 in every possible way, including thickness.
The Astro Slide has a proper mechanical keyboard, while the E90 had the same membrane garbage that 99% of keyboard phones have. Furthermore with the Astro you get to use the large main screen in both closed and open mode. These two features are a complete game changer and this phone will be a revolution for those who want to be productive on a phone.

Some small corrections.
"The device was announced at CES 2022" Incorrect, it was originally announced some time in 2020, and was also at 2021 CES, and may have been in the 2020 CES.
"brings a backlit keyboard that swivels from underneath the phone’s display thanks to its neat hinge mechanism." Incorrect, there is no swiveling at play here, it slides out, and then hinges up.
