20 January 2022
Users still on iOS 14 will be prompted to update to iOS 15 after a grace period of about three months.

Anonymous, 21 Jan 2022Apple gives 5 years upgrade, because thats exactly how long... moreOh look, yet another "Android has moar of everything" guy... It's especially funny when you all compare iOS to all the various Android versions from various vendors and then pick and choose all the best features from each and then call it "Android" like it's this unified single variant. If you're comparing iOS to Android, at least compare it to Android AOSP because that's the only thing that 100% guarantees it'll have those features on every single device running Android. Anything else, even Google's "stock" Android isn't that. And then come back and brag how Android has all the features in the world whole century ahead of iOS. Heh.

It would be an achievement if Apple gives 5 years upgrades but with many new features Android dont have.

The truth is, Android is better in some aspects, and iOS is better in others. Longevity and software support is one of Apple's strengths. But they're too obsessed to admit it.

Samsung, 20 Jan 2022Well.. Samsung has the biggest Android phone market share. ... moreYou can't just pick the best example and say "all Androids are like that" because Samsung is best representative. No, Samsung is like that and 99% of other vendors are absolute garbage in this regard. Samsung doesn't even remotely represent the largest share with all the Chinese brands with super cheap phones that are always have better specs on paper.

But of course, you will prefer any entry level chinese phone as a representative of Android, because thats the only way to make iphone looks more superior.

Is iOS 15 not considered "longer software support"? It's what they've been literally doing already all this time but now it's on the headlines, diehard fanboys suddenly see it as no software support when Android or Google leaves the security update - let alone a big Android version up to the manufacturer to release or not.

Samsung, 20 Jan 2022You must never heard about Samsung's android. Samsung ... moreAaaand you're doing the exact same lame excuse thing you people always do. When we complain that 99% of Android phone makers have atrocious software and updating support and out of all you always pick Samsung to deflect the criticism. Literally the ONLY Android phone maker with outstanding long term software support. Where's your Oppo/Vivo/Realme, where's your Poco, where is your Xiaomi? Huawei? Basically all Chinese brands are horribly bad at it.

Anonymous, 20 Jan 2022Meanwhile Google still supports Android 8I'm afraid you are wrong. Google has completely stopped supporting Oreo since November 2021. If you go to the Android Security Bulletin website*, Android Oreo had its last-ever security patch in October 2021.

What is the point of supporting older software when you go out of your way to offer a clear and easy update path to newer versions???

This has been Apple's approach for years, they have tried a modified approach with iOS 15 to help mitigate recent issue's with updates (which by the way are not limited to Apple alone). They could could have done nothing new at all and still gotten the usual criticism.

Anonymous, 20 Jan 2022Meanwhile Google still supports Android 8That's more out of necessity than desire. Google don't want to be seen abandoning older versions of Android where there are still a not insignificant number of devices in the wild running said older versions, and this being mainly because there is no official update path available.

I'm pretty sure that in Google's own version of an ideal world, they wouldn't need to support older versions the way they do.

[deleted post]You are a perfect example of being a blind fan. The blind fan is a creature with no brain they only use heart. As we know the heart has no logic. This fan culture killed many brands so I hope Shamesung will end that way. Shamesung mocks Apple and follows Apple blindly. Shamesung device hangs always whether it's a flagship or budget range. Shamesung's Exynos is the worst chipset. But blind fan far from logic and truth.

Or did you actually mix up Android and iOS and you were describing Android. Because for Android, that is actually the case for a lot of "no name" brands that just churn out phones and basically never release any updates for them and they are essentially stuck with whatever version came with phone from the shop. Claiming that for iOS is entirely nonsensical statement given that they receive 5 major OS updates and yet somehow you're claiming they don't get security updates after just 1 year. Somehow. Makes no sense at all.

Anonymous, 20 Jan 2022Meanwhile Google still supports Android 8There is a grand canyon sized gap between "Google supports Android 8" and "Users actually getting any updates for Android 8". What you're claiming is just the bare minimum to use apps. They can't afford to demand from users to run much newer OS because of how many are still stuck on these ancient versions. There is no such thing on iOS where even phones from 2015 are still getting major OS updates. You can afford demanding minimum OS version for apps when you do that and iOS does that.

I've made a visual spreadsheet of how updates are delivered on Android and iOS:
                                    https://rejzor.wordpress.com/2021/08/04/comparison-of-android-and-ios-long-term-software-support/

They both cease support after roughly 10 years, but it's the part in between that's very different.

Right, because cramming more features on old device isn't expected to work slower as is, but you call it planed obsolescence anyway, but all the Android phone makers intentionally leaving you out of any updates after just year or two totally aren't planned obsolescence, right? Riiiight? Come on, get real.
