A lot of people use them for other things!

"The majority of movies are released in a 21:9 ratio."
So what? Most media watched on phones is 16:9 etc Many people prefer to watch a movie on their TV set, not on phone.

16:9 content still looks good on a 19:9 screen. no problem here.

For the real movie fan that needs (?) to watch 21:9 content on phone yes Sony is a better option, but its not ideal for many others .

16:9 altough i like it is too squarish for a phone . There are the navigation buttons and menu's they eat a lot of vertical space.
So having that so 16:9 movie watching get optimalised is like ehm No? Sacrifice too many other things

21:9 is too stretched. Having this to watch optimalised cinema stuff and make the phone easier to hold makes no sense as the phone gets too long wich is very clumsy in pocket and bags and the balance in hand gets worse. So you then still have gigantic screen but it is as narrow as an old 5" 16:9 phone? no thanks .

Well too each its own, but you starting over golden ratio makes me laugh.

Why they don't put wifi 6e inside all of them? I thought to update all aps all around home and work, and even chinees company add this into budget phones, but not SaMsUnG. What's wrong with them?

mawlki, 27 Jan 2022Looking cunning, smart, wise? 18.5:9 is the middle of the ... moreSorry, why would I want my phone to look cunning, smart, or wise?
                          It's a gadget, a communications tool.

Just because something is between two things, does not make it the optimal choice. That is a logical fallacy. In this case, it's clearly not. Your average phone is used for media consumption, almost exclusively. The majority of movies are released in a 21:9 ratio. If you tried to watch it on a ~19:9 screen, either you will lose a good chunk of the image. Which is bad. Or you will have to zoom out, get letter-boxing on the sides, which sacrifices the resolution and makes the image smaller.... all the while occupying a larger phone physical space in your hands and pockets. This applies to YouTube videos as well, which the vast majority is shot by a 16:9 camera. Since there's a huge difference between 16:9 and 21:9, you are actually better served choosing one or the other. The obvious choice is 16:9 because the vast amount of media that is out there is still on this standard. So rationally, it makes more sense to stick with what is optimised, for the majority of the time, then make compromises for few of the time.

So your subjective opinion is very flawed. An aspect ratio of 20:9, 19:9, or even 18:9 are bad options. They aren't optimised. The content on screen will be making a compromise ALL of the time. It's a bad call from Samsung.

The "golden ratio" is not worthless. Ever worked in any office in the past decades? A4 paper, A3 paper, and A5 paper are very predominant. And if you had this half-square shape in your tablet, it would be more ergonomic than if you had a full-rectangle shape (eg 16:9 tablets). Now if you read back, I did say that was a "bonus" tidbit. I wasn't recommending it outright. And the reason is that most content doesn't target it, besides office documents, and the iMAX Cinema movies. So while it is easy to recommend it for tablet owners, its not optimal for phone users, which majority will be viewing 16:9 content.

I guess the solution to get it, would be to have something like the Huawei Mate X Fold (the 2019 original), which will have something narrow/rectangular like a 21:9 Folded Display in the "phone mode". And when you fold it out, it will have a more wider/squarey like 12.73-to-9 Main Display. You can combine both content creation, and media consumption, on the same device without compromising either option. But this depends on if we have the technology to do this, because we need to create an external glass that is durable and flexible.

It was a great lineup in 2019 with the Meizu 16xs, 16s, 16t.
...they defied the market and refused to do a notch, and instead innovated in putting their Selfie Camera in the smallest bezel ever. I want to see more of that.

With that said, imagine how much more compact their device would be if they kept the same 87% Screen-to-Bezel ratio, but they opted for a 16:9 display instead. They could've made their "medium phone" compete against Compacts, or their "large phone" against the regular 19:9 phones of the time.
