Motorola patents flip phone with an outward display

The folded display will essentially wrap under the phone.

To my knowledge, transparant titanium doesn't exist (...yet) so yes it will definitely be something to handle with (lots of) care. Secondly, even if oleophobic coated, it will ge soo greasy that it you spend more time rubbing it off than looking at the content. As it will be closed each time you don't use it, it will always rest on on side of the display...great for creating a sanded kind of finish after a while...
No nagging that all phones are the same is not a reason to create whatever useless design just for the sake of creating somethin new. A flipor foild phone (inwards screen of course) does add value wheather it be a more compact device (closed) while keeping a full fledged screen estate when open, or having a normal one (closed) or a tablet when open is certainly usefull for some but having it outside add nothing of this as you lose all the space inside and you seriously increase the potential damages to the outside screen. As such phones are still being seriously expensive, be my gest to buy one and having to look for a new one after a few...hours, days...

Plus durability is a genuine concern, assuming the thing would use plastic for the screen, we all know how fragile foldable displays are so it'd probably be destroyed and covered in deep gouges in the first week of the phone's use

In my opinion, this has the potential to be awesome. As someone who owned and loved the Samsung ZFlip 3, I think many of yall might be missing the point on why the flip type phones (Z, RAZR) are so great. It's not because they're a party trick or because they have an interior screen. For most people, it's because they are so damn COMPACT! It was great to have a phone that took up half the space in my pockets, work bag, tote to the beach, etc.

The biggest downside was the limited utility when closed. Only being able to take advantage of a few functions meant constantly having to open to Fullscreen. This design seems to like it *could* have significant more utility when closed and very little to no crease when unfolded.

I agree with those also that have concerns about the long term durability of the screen. But I'm sitting here on my pixel 6 as we speak that always has it's screen open to the elements, drops, scratches from my pocket.... Yet I am generally careful with it and the glass is strong enough to withhold most problems it might encounter. So if Moto is able to utilize glass (or another material, or a mixture) that is strong enough/premium enough, I see a device like this being awesome. At least I know I would buy it (as long as it isn't Verizon exclusive grrr 😖).

                Just my two cents ✌️

The way inward display fold is so tight, this design will have almost no crease and allow cheaper displays.
The idea is good, but as every good ideas in the smartphone market, it will never make it out of the drawing board.

We rarely ever see these sketches come to fruition. Patents doesn't mean actual products for them.

The biggest problem with Motorola has been their software update policy. I personally do not mind it because I find updates overrated. But many people hate "Moto-nopa's" lack of support in both software and hardware issues.

I do love my Razr 5G but I do wish they included a flagship SoC in it. While Samsung uses better components but the Flip 3 is the worse flip phone in design because the cover display is still too small and useless.

Okay but...why? What would the gain be to have the screen fold outwards?

Anonymous, 07 Feb 2022Well anyone's free to give their opinions. You can... moreSpeculating on if something will or not break without ANY knowledge of this and stating it as a fact IS an idiotic thing and NOT an “opinion”.
Opinion : I think this will break.
Not an opinion : It will break.

And when “giving your opinion” hurt others (in this case, the whole fricking market), it is NOT anymore a case of "AnYoNe Is FrEe tO gIvE tHeIr OpInIoN" if it is to then complain that phones have useless features everywhere, OEMs doesn't listen to customers, phones become more expensive and OEMs basically screw over their communities.

You either swallow your hatred and stop constantly trying to put down everything, or you accept that this market is awful because of you and those who act like you and will only become worse as times pass.
But what you write, and more importantly the way you wrote it about the pop-ups just prove you only want to be mean and negative for no reasons.
And guess what, I don't expect the pop-up to return, I just use it as an EXAMPLE, but I do expect people like you to continue and in result the market to become even worse.
Now, I don't even care what this cursed Smartphone market becomes, in fact I now take satisfaction in watching auto-karma striking at those like you when they cry that they'd wish X or Y features were a thing while bashing for no reasons other features they could perfectly ignore and not understanding the problem.

                          another useless gimmick. great.

Motorola is innovative!!! The modular phone. Which now all the sudden apple has magsafe. Motorola had that tech was developed years prior to Apple getting it. Now a going back to flip phone.

I love how, without having a SINGLE CLUE about how this hypothetical phone's screen would be made, people are already bashing it because “it is fragile, it will get scratches, it will break, drop it once and it's done”.
Exactly like they did with the pop-up selfie cameras, who ended up being extremely resilient and durable.
But since idiots don't learn from their past mistakes, they are at it again.
They don't know if it will use glass, plastic, a hybrid, fricking transparent titanium, a goddam regenerative nanobot sheet, or if simply it is made in a way that is shock resistant enough and a simple flexible (plastic) protector would be enough against scratches.

Then, they'll “surprise Pikachu face” style not understand why there are no innovations and phones are boring with no new techs, when they are the one who kill it.
And as usual, this cancerous behavior is often carried out by anonymous accounts, which are the plague of GSMArena.

gbdeg, 07 Feb 2022glass is glass and glass breaksAt least it doesn't get irrepairably scratched by looking at it funny like plastics do. I don't know why you all assume drops are the No.1 damage to displays. It's not. It's scratches that happen either way. Drops do not.

Even if it comes with hardened glass, a simple drop will cause atleast a small dent and I can't envision any working case for this device.

I do not get what would be the point of having a device with an outside folded display other than wanting customers to buy a new one every week or month because of having damaged the display, simply by getting it in- and out of your pocket. Don't get me wrong, I still believe in the added value of flex display tech but not at this stage where materials are not yet strong enough to withstand normal daily abuse when being exposed to everything.
