Samsung will only update the Galaxy A51 twice a year from now on

08 February 2022
That's really odd, as the phone isn't that old.

2 updates a year is not great, but why do they bang on about monthly updates for a phone?
I mean who does monthly updates except some app developers?

Scram, 09 Feb 2022And after the first 24 months?I'd like to know too!

One reasonable option is to buy a midrange phone with the latest Android version each year, enjoy regular security patches and then sell it off. For example, The Realme 9 Pro will be announced next week with Android 12. It will receive monthly patches for six months and then bi-monthly. I might get that, skip the Realme 10 if it's released in October, and get the Realme 11, which would presumably ship with Android 13.

If you know Android's recent internal infrastructure, a security update shouldn't involve that much the underlying chipset. Its not the same for major version upgrades.

This is simply a scam/lie/laziness from Samsung.

Shame, all I care about is security updates, couldn't care less about 8 major updates on a phone, I would rather have 5 years of monthly security patches and bug fixes.

Buggy and high maintenance Exynox 9611 giving pain to the developer's ass. They are frustrated now. In the last few months, A51 gets regular maintenance patches names of security patches are now the company bound to take this harsh decision.

This is interesting, considering that the rest of the Ax1 lineup are still getting quarterly security latch. Why drop the A51 so soon?

Welp, this is just sad isn't it.

That's why you go for Samsung instead of Chinese smartphones, software support. Most Chinese brands abandon their devices very quickly, especially Oppo, Vivo, realme only giving 1 android update for sub $400 smartphones, Xiaomi is a bit better, their redmi note series fetting 2 android updates mostly.

This might have something to do with the SoC and the difficulty of developing updates for it, compared to the SoC inside the 5G version.

Anyway, the important thing is the fact that it will continue to be updated. I don’t really understand this perverted obsession that some people have with getting instant updates and then going nuts if it’s the 1st day of a new month and they don’t have one to download. Let’s face it, if a serious entity wants to gain access to your data, it will get it, regardless if you have the February or January security patch.

I don't mind waiting for a new OS version update, but waiting for a security patch is not a good thing if you ask me.

But this device is 2 years old now, and it's not a flagship. If anything, this is pretty consistent to what they promised. I don't see why to be surprised about it.

It'll still get 4 years of security updates like the flagships.

Its chip division (SC) and mobile division aren't always on the same page. The Mobile Division will flirt with SC or Qualcomm (Q) depending on which is best for its bottom line.

If the AMD collaboration turns out to be a success, Samsung Mobile will ditch Q on more devices. If Samsung Chip continues to underperform, the Mobile Division will use more Q chips. While Samsung Chip execs will be booted out. Nothing personal: Just business.

Yeah, this is something to keep in mind. To me, years of updates means nothing if they're only twice a year. It means the phone isn't patched 10 out of 12 months. Realme does monthly patches for 6 months and then bimonthly for another 18 months.
