    Basically since the display is smaller and the refresh rate was supposed to go down to 10 Hz, it could save battery, but Samsung seems to have mislead consumers, it's actually 48 Hz(like the S21 and S21+), so yeah, worse battery life even with screen on time.
    But they used this extra space for a bigger top speaker(it seems symmetrical in size with the bottom one), bigger main camera sensor and more room for OIS.

            The selfie camera does have autofocus.
            A 10 MP 3x optical zoom is possibly sharper than a 64 MP 3x hybrid zoom, the 64 MP might be brighter in low light but that's it, Samsung seems to have improved the clarity of it's zoom pictures, maybe from the lens, OIS, software, or all three.
            But the high resolution pictures won't be 64 MP anymore but 50 MP.
            The smaller battery might not impact the screen on time negatively, since the display's refresh rate can go down to 10Hz now, but it might affect calls and standby battery life negatively.

              Apple had the same front on theirs iPhone in 2017, 2018, 2019, flat back and frame in 2020, shrinked notch in 2021.
              The camera island look the same since 2019, it just got bigger and they added a LiDAR.

                              what the hell happened to the cameras? They've been downgraded considerably
                              - no autofocus on the ultrawide so no macro mode
                              - no autofocus on the selfie cam
                              - lower resolution zoom lens

                              not to mention the smaller battery on the vanilla model and the stupid no charger in box anti-consumer practice

                              Samsung has truly fallen from grace

And now the S22 has a smaller battery, really why? Technology evolves but this shouldn't be used as a reason to move backwards. I honestly believe that the only reason Samsung reduced the battery capacity is to raise it back for the next generation and sell it as a feature! :p

                                  Tiny battery in S22 is out of my list.

For that money of the S22 entry level, I'd rather get the Xperia 5iii as you've mentioned.

                                      Xperia 5iii is previous gen SD888 (still excellent) and I expect tech to improve and progress moving forward. Not that concern with S22 battery IMO, it's not great, but decent enough.
