Microsoft readying a laptop with SD 8cx Gen 3, to be faster than some AMD and Intel rivals

Those early Geekbench results don't even tell the whole story.

I have an M1 Air and you're spot on about performance for general purpose computing vs content production. It's not bad for general purpose, but 8 cores can only go so far. Another positive about the M1 SoC is the SSD bandwidth is super high so memory swapping is crazy good. I'd still prefer just more cores personally though.

Gen 3 you say? I am interested. price and screen size and quality of screen matter as well.

Because its function is do work quicker. ARM complete each instruction set separately to complete a task, while x86 complete upto 9 instruction sets to complete a task. This complicated applications like engineering tools which are seen in factory, it farms, servers, PLC controller, design kits, data analysis use x86 system as a whole.

Windows provides update instantly after releasing. Their patches are evev more frequent than androids. And importantly, even people who got windows licenses key from 3rd party or activator software or patches can use full featured windows 11 without any hiccup in 250+ dollar windows machines unlike Apple macs

Tom rider is already an old game and m1 can't run few more than that with a mediocre performance. About other pro apps, only Apple based applications will shine. Most of engineering tools and pro applications are run on Intel 12th gen even will put the m1 pro max in shame.. Where m1 can really shine in multimedia use. Still I will pick a smart tv or smartphone or tablet over a pc or laptop for multimedia.

Had to happen after the Mac M1 chips. All the better for consumers. And very soon, even prosumers. Just that MS had said that Windows 10 will be the last version of Windows you will ever need. Till they came out with Windows 11 that will not load on some fairly new machines that came pre-installed with 10 because of lack of TPM. When ARM takes over, will we need to have one more last, last, we-swear-it-will-truly-be-last version of Windows 12 (or whatever they call it)? Apple is able to provide seamless updates to their hardware. But Windows Phone and PC has been a nightmare.

So, Microsoft may finally make their dream of one device fits all a reality. They tried this with Windows Mobile and Continuum. I wonder if there is a potential in the concept of an ultra powerful phone thar acts as a PC when connected to an external monitor and peripherals.

Which is tanscoding/encoding/decoding of multimedia and web browsing. They use ARM with many dedicated accelerators that keep low power profile while doing everything really fast. Because if you do many rather generic raw compute tasks on CPU cores, it's suddenly not as fast as it seems otherwise. But that's fine, because those tasks are in minority and it's not really an issue. x86 seems much more general purpose and may not excel in any task, but it's still very good for any task.

B52, 11 Feb 2022I think it really is and we are at the start of a great PC ... moreM1 is good because Apple's Rosetta 2 is good. If there is a comparable compatiblity layer on Windows 11 then this can be good. If not, Windows on ARM will remain mediocre. From what I hear... Windows 11 has great x86 / x64 compatibilty as long as you don't need drivers. Drivers are pretty important though.

I will take the notes when Nvidia make a motherboard that uses a ARM chip so powerful it rival other desktop chips, until then ARM is not gonna do much due to software limitations and only focusing on low power consumption + LTE.

talha5007, 10 Feb 2022so the future is ARM based laptops.I think it really is and we are at the start of a great PC revolution.

Apple started this "war" with M1, such powerful CPU with so low TDP, superb performance and battery time that it made rivals obsolete.
(I just played Rise of Tomb Raider for more than 2 hours on my lap, laptop was just slightly warm and it had more than 50% battery left. It was hard to believe what I experienced after s*cking for years with hot intel/amd windows laptops with screaming fans... And Macbooks are absolutely not even meant for gaming.)
My only concern is maintenance and lack of upgradability.

Because of M1, a lot of important apps are already converted to run on ARM processor (like AutoCAD, Office, multimedia apps, etc..) I do not think it would be a real issue for Windows ARM either, especially if multiple ARM based devices are to be appeared on the market.

Windows on ARM could be the bridge between Windows and Android too.

I also think that ARM based business class laptops are going to be a thing soon.

Guess what this new Microsoft laptop is running... yeah, it's ARM. No tool is ever useless if you understand the numbers. These synthetic benchmark tools are meant to showcase peak performance and when used under same conditions and same versions, they can show meaningful differences. The problem is people who make all the rage because something scores 1400 instead of 1500...

It suprises me still how gsm still prefers geekbench scores when they're of the most tech relevant journal than so called tech reviewers! Geekbench is the least preferable stretch benchmark for real tech relevant reviewers like ltt, steve from gamer nexus, hardware unboxed, jarros's tech, tech researcher lke MLD and so on.

Only apple based reviewers who has minimal tech knowledge prefers geekbench like maxtech.
