In the heavily commodified smartphone market we're heading to, where every third rate budget phone is good enough for 90% of people, mediatek will be king.

That's not surprising, given that more and more low to mid-range phones are being pumped into the western market.

Other than iPhones, flagship Galaxys and Pixels, it's mostly TCL, Motorola and budget Galaxys that are dominating the market, at least here in Canada.

Additionally, LG and HTC are now out of the phone business, and Huawei and Sony* phones aren't available in the west, which leaves a huge gap in the western smartphone market.

    *At least in Canada

.alpha, 02 Mar 2022Sanctions soonMediaTek is Taiwan based not mainland china so there is no need to sanction or ban them same with TSMC which is Taiwan too. Kirin is the only China based soc that is well known, theres also Unisoc but insignificant presence in the mobile market.

well i hope that with this, there would be more software support for mediatek chips.

They were very evenly-matched with TSMC until 7nm, where Samsung has started to slightly lag behind, and the gap grew wider with 5nm all the way up to 4nm today. Hopefully Samsung could get things right again so we can have more options for chipmakers to manufacture their silicon.

Anonymous, 02 Mar 2022Ignore them they don't right now the best graphics car... moreJust because they were made using Samsung's fabrication process, does not clearly mean that it was good. In the first place, there were no TSMC-made flagship GPU available in recent times, as far as I'm aware of, so it's not fair to say that Samsung is ahead because there's just no comparison to be made. I'm not saying that TSMC would be better, but a comparison should be done first before declaring something to be the best.
Regardless, it was already evident that TSMC's fabrication process is really much more energy efficient than Samsung's counterpart, so we can safely assume that those best GPUs that you're talking about can reach greater heights if they were manufactured on TSMC's process.

Also, haven't you thought of this: if Samsung's fabrication process were already that good to be comparable to TSMC, if not better, then why are they still bothering to move back to TSMC to fabricate the next Qualcomm flagship SoC?? With Samsung, they can have as many orders as they want, and they won't have to be hurdled by other customers asking for orders to Samsung's manufacturing facilities, while with TSMC, they would have to deal with the likes of Apple and MediaTek who are also taking up lots of workforce and facilities.
It only means one thing: Qualcomm believes that TSMC has the better manufacturing process and therefore they want to get back to them as soon as they can.

If mediatek continues like this it will crush snapdragon. But I do not wish this to happen because if mediate becomes a monopoly it will be like snapdragon because there wont be competition
