The Xiaomi 12 trio receives perfect A+ marks from DisplayMate

16 March 2022
The displays are calibrated at the factory, which helped to achieve "visually indistinguishable from perfect" results on multiple tests.

The DisplayMate rating is most likely worthless. To quote initial impressions from Android Authority https://www.androidauthority.com/xiaomi-12-pro-and-xiaomi-12-hands-on-3136748/

"In my short time with the phones, however, I noticed something worrying. When set side-by-side, the Xiaomi 12 Pro’s screen skewed a bit red in color and the Xiaomi 12’s screen skewed a bit yellow. The difference wasn’t as noticeable when the phones were held separately, but it was plainly obvious when they were close together. Moreover, the red hue to the Xiaomi 12 Pro’s screen was splotchy and confined to about two-thirds of the screen."

I was considering getting the Xiaomi 12 (I live in China, had early access) and the only reason I didn't buy it was because the display was terrible. Colors might be accurate but the amount of rainbow banding is surreal. Instead, I went for the last year's Find X3 Pro and never looked back.

How can they give it a A+ rating when I don't see rec2020 at 100% on those graphs, no 12 bit panel, which is the current upper end consumer spec, with 16 bit proposed?

I never trust display mate. You can see that in the last 3 - 4 years all phones sent get A+.
But put side by side, devices show huge difference when displaying images or videos.

This reminds me what dxomark does. I do not remember which phone was the review, but there was a comparison between a samsung, vivo and huawei for exposure/white balance.

Below the vivo and huawei samples, you could see mention of accurate colours. But both were completely different.
So, if one was accurate then the other cant be when so different.

Battery saving modes reduce as well.

Most of the time, the peak brightness advertised by phone manufacturers is just for HDR playback, this is why both the S22+ and S22 Ultra are reaching 1210 and 1270 nits respectively under bright light and not the 1750 nits advertised.

So what flagship can maintain the higher sustainable brightness at the beach during all day? 13 pro max? S22 ultra?
