Is there a Walkman do-re-mi in Sony Ericsson Remi?

01 July, 2008
Another Sony Ericsson phone has leaked once again. Codenamed Remi, the newbie shares a great deal of the Walkman-branded Sony Ericsson looks...

Oh my, the T610 still looks absolutely stunning. What a brilliant phone that was, extremely sturdy, lightweight, and at the cutting edge of technology at the time. Too bad I lost mine on vacation :-(

The sad thing is, the *only* reason I haven't bought a Sony Ericsson this time around is that the audio jack is on the side of every model with built in FM radio (and no slow-as-molasses Symbian thank-you-very-much). So Nokia it is... (If you think this is silly, you're entitled to, but convenience is subjective.)

Anonymous, 02 Jul 2008SE will increase this year because of the new phones which... moreWell your aspirations are noble, but sorry - I think S-E no longer deserve any favours. Just when the world is going ga-ga over touchscreens, Sony Ericsson has cancelled two UIQ handsets and keep churning out some models on old hardware. They had a good platform but they failed to capitalize on it and let iPhone steal all the spotlight.

Meanwhile, Nokia is thrashing everyone else without a single touchscreen phone in its lineup.

I admit I am intrigued by Xperia, but it is windows-based and therefore will struggle against HTC and other WM vendors. Also, it will do nothing for them in the mass market where the action is.

C905 looks good - but what use is an 8 megapixel phone if it is not a smartphone? Nokia learned this lesson long ago and not all their high-end phones are smartphones (8800 excepted).

A new T610 would be great. T610 was SE greatest phone. T610 4ever.

I think despite having a good touch platform (UIQ), S-E have all but lost it. Imagine sliding to fifth place behind LG! All these people who 'always buy S-E' must be on another planet.

How it came to this? Poor design of course. And a muddy lineup, with people not knowing which phone did what.

Its really a shame, given the backing of a brilliant company like Sony.

Previous posts are right, Remi is (almost) the same as the W890 but with different looks and a little (or no) variation on features or uses different firmware. The strategy used by SE for these two phones also led to the production of the following pairs:

                  K750 - W800
                  K550 - W610
                  K530 - W660
                  S500 - W580
                  Z710 - W710

Some other manufacturers also use a (somewhat) similar strategy.

One example from the top manufacturer:
                  6500 Slide - 5610 XpressMusic

why SE Phones all look like they came from a single design template? its like they have a one master pattern then it gets altered in some way when they want to create a new phone.

I think that of all phones, Sony Ericssons are the most professional looking. They would make the best smart phones once they got the hand of it (at least the best fashion-wise).

why dont these people make any good looking handsets...all recently released handsets look very boxy...nowadays good looks too play an important role in the sales figure of a handset...

Now our noble Sony Ericsson got its new Java Platform 8 and now creating the same handsets with the same looks. What happened to the Back key? We loved the back key.
