How much does fast charging cost in terms of battery capacity?

27 March 2022
Have you noticed that phones with fast charging tend to have smaller batteries than phones without? We investigate whether the trade off is worth it.

I'd like to comment my vote:
on day to day basis a slow overnight charge is the best, but ideal phone should have a 100+W option (or a swappable and standardized battery) in cases when you don't have time to charge it for a long time, like a stop during vacation/hiking.

would have been nice back then with smaller batteries and power banks not yet available. these days, the affordable phones have large batteries that I almost don't need charging outside home. At home, I charge at the PC USB port at less than 5W! No wonder Apple insisted with the 5W charger for a long time

It would be nice to see you testing how fast charging affects battery longevity/health.

I like the option of 3x different charging speeds. With my red magic device I use 2x different charging speeds.

However. I have just ordered the K50 Gaming Edition handset directly from China. As some of you know. That comes with 120w charging.

As I replace my phones every 1-2 years. The degrading battery life doesn't bother me in the slightest. As I change my phones every 1-2 years.

Also. Who would really want to keep a phone for 3-4 years? As a gamer. I prefer to try to keep reasonably upto date with technology.

I think some of us think the same way here too.

The battery degradation will really affect most users if they plan keeping there phones after 2/3/4 years.

So for me. I am delighted to have 120w charging ability. However. There is nothing wrong with also having alternative charging speeds...

But one thing is for sure... That 120w charging ability will definitely come in handy for those spur of the moment days. Or you forget to charge your phone. That kind of thing.

The engineer is in RnD (research and developments) And employer hiring these engineers so designers.. They have meetings with boss and boss has no clue about it... He will just approve him to do it

NeonHD, 28 Mar 2022Huh, I never noticed that until now you mention it. So the ... moreThe fast charging tech required rare earth material called GaN (Galium Nitrate) which mostly available in China.

China is also leading the DC electric technology. China have 1 million voltage DC transmission cable while the rest of the world only using 220kW AC.

I think if all OEMs implemented bypass charging that would really help in prolonging battery longevity. My 5+ years old Redmi Note 3 and 3s still deliver 8-9 & 10+ hour SoT respectively. The former is still in active use. In both bypass charging working by just limiting the maximum battery charging percentage with root. In my Poco F1 however it only worked at 100% charge. Battery capacity was down to 80% in just 20 months when I finally figured out how to trigger bypass charging at lower levels by limiting the max. battery charging voltage. I did use the bundled fast charging for the first year or so. Either that or maybe Xiaomi cutting corners as usual could have caused battery health to go down rather quickly. Currently down to 66% only in 2.5 years.

It could be the same battery in fast charging phones and slow charging ones, just charged to 4.4v in slow charge and 4.2 in quick charge so it doesn't impact the battery as much. That's why the difference in capacity.

The 65W SuperVOOC from OPPO (which is used by OnePlus and Realme as well) is my favourite. Its charging efficiency is even better than Xiaomi's 67W and Huawei's 66W given a similar size battery.
