It's fact that Google intentionally slows down microSD card access. They started restricting access to SD card since Android 4.4 KitKat.

I tested it on my Android 8 phone. At first, I tested with a 3rd party file manager like "Total Commander". I have a folder on the microSD card that contains about 30k small files. Rename, copy, move, delete operations are extremely slow. Then I used the "Files" app (it's called "Downloads" in the app drawer), and also the stock file manager (it's a separate file manager), and they are much faster. The difference in speed is huge, compared to a 3rd party file manager.

        Here, take a look.

Literally the only phones lacking micro sd slot are Google phones, Apple phones, and Samsung Galaxy S phones. Literally every other has micro SD slot, even Samsung's Galaxy A series.

James, 09 May 2022Just imagine they are providing you 128 GB as base storage ... moreSadly. In fact it's not just that you only get that. It's that they downgraded to that. They brought it to 12, 256 with expandable. Then decided they can't be doing that and reverted to 8, 128. Then to 8, 128 non expandable.
Now even cheap phones are lacking headphone and charger. Sd to follow.

Not to mention all the other aspects that are severely lacking in upgrades for years.

Just imagine they are providing you 128 GB as base storage in premium segment, while a m.2 nvme storage doesnt even cost a 100. The funny part is where you will plug this sd cards nowadays?to a cheap mobile phone that gives you sd card slot and 256GB storage for 200$. While premium segment offers you only 128GB for 1000$,and no way to expand.

Wongwatt, 06 May 2022Apparently devices have started to appear since 2020 but it... more"... because Google and Apple are not interested in expandable storage."

That's the most important line which explains why this will never be implemented. They want you to shell out more on higher storage variants, as well as a cloud storage subscription, because that's the goal.

"As far as I know there are no dual UFS SoCs to date."
They won't bother making another one. You already know the answer.

A new JEDEC standard is coming out where the internal memory is removable, but I'm not sure how soon we could see that. Hopefully it arrives before 2025.

Anonymous, 05 May 2022also seriously, 5x, 10000x? are you kidding me?Yep. The Google APIs are FUSE mounts with a very poor implementation. The 5x or 10x usually quoted is loss of optimal sequential speed. What Google doesn't talk about is the incredibly high latency. Small reads are in the ballpark of 10000x slower. This means that OsmAnd+ goes from real-time to stalling for hours.
