Snapdragon 8 Gen 1+ is postponed for the second half of 2022

06 May 2022
The main reason is the resurging COVID restrictions in China.

Kangal, 10 May 2022No worries, it's a nice change of pace instead of the ... moreThanks for offering your design, but for a case I'll just go with a mass production one that offers just sufficient protection. I've gotten old and lazy. However, you do realised that when you start using different materials for different parts, you ARE considering all the points together and acknowledging that there are strengths and weaknesses for every material.

As for metals with a case, most people fail to realise that the "unibody" designs are punctured with holes with antenna leading OUT of the innards of the phones to form those antenna lines. That's one of the key reasons iPhones could never have NFC nor wireless charging until they switch to a glass sandwich design. However, unless you open up the phone to rewire the antenna I highly doubt you can even use it. This can be simply verified by wrapping the phone with 2 to 3 layers of aluminium foil, which should work out as a reasonable Faraday's cage and kill most RF signals and render the phone uncontactable.

As for why wireless charging coil is not in front? because most people will interact with their phones at some point where they are charging the phones? it's just a user friendly design. phone stop charging everytime you check a msg vs continuous charging even when you use the phone.

As for the watch, I only learnt belatedly that luxury watch wearers are no strangers to cracked /completely shattered sapphire crystals. There's a whole market out their for people replacing their watch crystals.

mooox, 09 May 2022thanks for the insightful comments. One of my point is, ... moreNo worries, it's a nice change of pace instead of the usual comments you see here.

      > One of my point is, you actually cannot consider the points independently. I think there's no better or or worse material.. it's all about what you would want to sacrifice to gain.

      Not entirely accurate.
You can break down things to see their strengths and weaknesses. But as you can see, I tried to do that, and find the ultimate compromise for this form-factor. You wouldn't build a space-rocket the same way you would build a submarine.
...however, one thing that I didn't expand upon is a holistic approach. Use a specific build materials at different areas, and use specific shapes at different areas. So you can think of this as the corners, the flat side, the front edges, front face, back face, and back edges.

I have my own design on this matter, not sure if you are interested in it.

About the leather, that's a given. Basically all leather is treated and held together with resins, with the hide providing good insulation from temperature and charge. The bonds are fractured over time, and lose their rigidity and properties. That's why I cringed when I saw those older ASUS/Lamborghini-branded Laptops with Leather construction. Or when people pay extra to get Alcantara in their cars (it feels soft and great in the showroom, but ages horribly especially on the steering wheel). So besides the mid-section of the backpanel of a phone, there's no real sensible place to use it. And you would only use it for the Luxury segment, next to the Crystal-Sapphire phone, or Swarovski diamonds.

Wood is excellent material. You need to have the phone be non-dense, so we're talking around the Samsung Note-4 size and 150g mass, then add the housing. Softwood is less hardy and more spongy, and this can be used as a sacrificial to protect the important insides. Minor blemishes on the exterior might be covered by the grain-pattern. Hardwood is more sturdy, but doesn't dampen shocks as well. But both are excellent materials. However, you cannot use this on a phone. Each tree is different, and each cut is different. It is not possible to do a Mass Production when we are talking about precise cuts. You could be choosey with your slab, meticulously cut with precision lasers, and after several failed attempts get something perfect. But that's just not acceptable on the scale of shipping 100,000 units per Day.

HTC were the first to develop a design using Metal Unibody and allowing wireless transmission. Apple followed them the next year. Then it was BBK and Xiaomi. So it's not true. And remember that 45% of the phone's area is open, just flat glass, and that lets all your wireless needs through. Not sure why they didn't put the wireless charger on the front instead of the back? It's probably because it is inefficient, and the excess heat may cause burn-in on the OLED displays.

My experience with Sapphire has been very different to yours. It is harder, yes, more brittle. But this isn't a factor on a phone. Watches with regular Glass have seen them crack often. Whilst, Sapphire seems to resist impact a bit better, and transfer it into the housing. Thanks to it's circle shape, and thick sides hugging it. I have a 20yo one which is in pristine condition for the sapphire, whilst the stainless steel is severely damaged.

SD695 is like brand new CPU compared to many years old SD845.
On benchmarks scores they looks simmilar but on several aspects SD695 proven better.

For example, if they added nitrogen cooling, they would never run into heat issues. However, the manufacturers cut too many corners with too little cooling, resulting in the processors having worse than expected performances.

that said.. his reply does seem rather out of place, and out of context.

One of my point is, you actually cannot consider the points independently.

For example, if we were to consider pocketability as you mentioned, and assuming only pure listed materials are used:
                  1. leather cannot work out because it is too soft, unless you use really thick leather which makes it uncomfortable to use. Most "leather" cases are a combination of plastic with leather/cardboard wrapping. And is aging a real issue? i would think that acids from our sweat would cause A LOT more problems than anything else. FYI: Cartier states that their leather straps must be replaced yearly because that's how long they expect it to last with normal use (nevermind the wear and tear, the stink is also disgusting).
                  2. at a pocketable size, typical softwood cannot survive minor abuse, and typical hardwood is not cheap and very heavy. They also require a lot of treatment if they were to survive moisture, sweat, scratches, etc. Even then, those treatment can't survive daily use, and will wear off after a short period of time.
                  3. metal, regardless of how good they are, are simply not suitable because they will block electrical waves and signals. What's the point of a phone if you can't make calls or recieve messages?
                  4. Sapphire may be hard, heavy etc, but it is also more brittle than glass. a hard knock that will do nothing to glass may crack the sapphire glass in two. I personally have cracked the sapphire face of a really expensive watch by knocking it into the door as I was walking through it (i'm not about to spend another 5 digits to fix a watch that i cannot really wear everywhere).

I think there's no better or or worse material.. it's all about what you would want to sacrifice to gain.

77, 07 May 2022£1000 phone with no case or protection. 90% use cases here... moreAlmost everyone uses cases with their phones. As for any case, the choice is typically form vs function. For the materials you pointed out, none of them are actually functional nor useful in anyway. I'm sure most of the people with the money to spend would have gotten enough education to know NOT to get any of the materials you mentioned.

                    1. Carbon fibre - Yay, your phone won't be pierced by sharp rocks, and won't scratch so easily. However, a light drop will lightly shatter the glass because carbon fibre won't protect against any shocks. Given that I know of less than 1 person who has pierced their phones when they dropped it, I'm not sure that is the correct problem that you would be solving. BTW, I used custom made Carbon Fibre cases a few years ago for my S8 and I can tell you that it does not protect the phone that well.

                    2. Diamond coated - Yay, you can use your phone cover to scratch other people, but it will NOT protect against bumps, knocks or drops. In case you don't know, diamond is brittle. you only need to tap on it at strategic spots with a steel blade to split it apart.

                    3. Beryllium coated - MOHS hardness 4: any pen/metal can scratch this, not sure why anyone would want it. Nevermind that it's corrosive to the human tissue and people can die from inhaling any bits of it. Not to mention you won't be able to use 5g on your phone, and your normal phone signal would not work well. AND you lose wireless charging. Unless you only have a little bit of the metal to decorate parts of it.

                    4. brass coated - MOHS hardness 3: Your finger nails can scratch this. And everything bad about metal cases as above.

                    5. rhodium coated - MOHS hardness 6: your cover made with expensive material will look like rubbish after 2 days, because rhodium is extremely shiny. And everything bad about metal cases as above.
