Compare your XR with $900 Android phones of 2018, and they all have long support. Do not compare them with budget Android phones

Performance with iPhones is also very predictable and doesn't drop over time. Not to mention it's on very high level as it is from the beginning. I'm still on by all means ancient iPhone XR now and it's still so smooth and responsive with everything I do I haven't ever seen that with any Android phone and I've had some "flagship" models. So, I can kinda understand why iPhones keep their value high over time. Because they don't hold it artificially, they actually have performance and long term support to back that up.

one thing apple doesn't do is discounts before the launch of new phone, and even then, its only a 50 to 100$ discount.

In my country you can find a S22 Ultra, second hand, with about 850EUR. And we are talking about a 2 month old phone, not so second hand in the end.
Bottom line, Samsung phones depreciate the most in the shortest time. Depending how you look at it, it could be a bad thing or a good thing. For a guy who changes phones frequently, I see it as an absolute win. You can always try new phones, without loosing much money in the process.
Yeah, Chinese phones depreciate quickly too, but they aren't so expensive to begin with, like Samsung phones. Maybe now, since 2022, when Xiaomi or Realme phones are becoming more expensive, we can see a similar outcome. I mean, in my country a Xiaomi 12 Pro cost exactly the same like an iPhone 13 Pro. But, I am pretty sure, in 6-12 months time, the Xiaomi phone will loose maybe 30-50% of its initial value. And that is the perfect time to buy one.
