Weekly poll results: the Sony Xperia 1 IV and 10 IV are great, if you can afford them

21 May 2022
The two are pricier than last year's Mark 3 models, which were already putting a strain on fans' wallets.

Anonymous, 22 May 2022Sony phone are expensive for an Android phone 🤦🏻‍♂️Nah. Android user who clamor for the 3.5mm jack, sd card, flat screens etc should put their money where their mouth is and buy them no matter the price. Otherwise, their whining is just that, empty blabberings.

I'll always consider Sony, but if they don't support their products, then neither can I.

Anonymous, 22 May 2022Vivo is bad when it comes to software support. Revenue was... moreVivo has recently announced that phones released after X60 Pro (not including X60 Pro itself) will be supported with 3 years of OS updates. OnePlus and Oppo earned $37Bil of revenue, and they both said that they will do the same.

Xiaomi tends to get behind schedule when it comes to security patches, but promises to deliver 4 years of them on top of 3 years of OS updates nonetheless. LG literally shut down their mobile phone business yet they continue supporting the latest devices.

The length of software support directly indicates how many years one company cares about its customers. This isn't a problem with Windows since most of the updates are provided by Microsoft, but for Android & iOS (as well as MacOS to some extent) the manufacturers themselves bare all responsibility to send out security patches and OS updates to their devices. I bet most iPhone users don't care about these things but Apple still seeded the latest major OS update to iPhone 6S, which shows Apple has an intention to ensure older devices will have the latest features where possible and the newest security patches to defend them against vulnerabilities.

"People here demand 5-6 years of support, then get new phone every 12-24 months"
I had used my work phone, Galaxy S10, for around 33 months before replacing it with iPhone 13 Pro, and I'm still using P30 as my main phone since exactly 3 years ago. I've seen people around me still holding onto their iPhone 6s/7/8, Galaxy S9, P20, Mi 8 etc. I'd love to know the basis of your claim that people replace their phones once in 1-2 years.

None of the excuses that companies make for themselves or you make for them matters - poor update policy is becoming an increasingly major drawback for high-end smartphones as they become more expensive year after year, and more companies promise better software support for their older devices. Honor isn't an exception, either, since it has already departed from Huawei and is now officially out of China.

Iphone = most people want to buy it. And it has good customer/aftersales support.
Xperia = most android users avoid it. And it has bad customer/aftersales support.

But i agree both are overpriced with less features compared to the competitors.

Xperia should be cheaper than Samsung phone, because Samsung gives longer software support and has better network of official stores/ service center worldwide.

Remember the X20 UD? The first with screen biometry.
It never got new android version.

Xiaomi = 34 billion, phones do not get monthly patches, not even flagships of 2022

Samsung was already #1 in units sold and revenue when their best phones were not getting android new android before april.

Motorola sells near 60 million devices/year. Awful support in the last 5 years. Still giving profits to Lenovo.

Person has to be fool to think most care about new android. People do not even know name of the OS or who makes it. If comment session was 1% of reality, then phones larger than 15cm, without jack/slot would be doomed.

People here demand 5-6 years of support, then get new phone every 12-24 months. What's the point?

Iphones with stronger SoC get shitty after 4th iOS version. S22 with android 16 will be like using A02s.

If one is paying 1.6K for a phone they should at least expect 3 years of OS updates.

IP rating doesn't go as deep as 6m, no MIL-STD-810G compliant, no alert slider, no 144-165Hz display, no display brightness that goes 800-1200 nits, no Dolby vision, no 4 OS updates and 5 years of security updates, main camera sensor is just 1/1.7", no gimbal OIS, no sensor shift OIS, no ultrawide on front camera, no pop up selfie camera, no 4k60(front), no 8k on rear camera, no tri band GPS, no IR blaster, no radio FM, no ultrasonic fingerprint scanner, no Face ID, no 6000 mAh battery, no 50-120W charging, no 50-100W wireless charging, no UWB, no S Pen.
To be clear, I'm not saying there is a phone which has all these features at the same time, but it's bold of you to assume everybody is interested in the same things as you.
