Where you can +1 a co... moreThe upvotes from the original system were carried over to the new one (as the thumbs up upvote). You can see them on old comments.
And yes, the thumbs up is "special" as it still acts as an upvote. You can add one more reaction to that.
As for the number of emojis, you don't want to know how many I use in Skype 😁 You may be right that the checkmark and the X would get the most use, but it's day one, let's see how things develop.

Tbh the old upvote/downvote system on here was my favorite implementation, where only upvotes show but you can downvote to reduce the number of upvotes. It was a very simple system, which I appreciated.
This new reaction system is fine, but I think it could've been done more better. I would prefer if they copied XDA's implementation, where there is an upvote button, but you can hover over it to reveal a menu of other reactions. Here, you have to jump into the smiley face menu to access the upvote button.

This is a good change in spirit. But 18 reactions might be a bit too much. This becomes especially obvious when multiple people react differently and you see a long list of emojis under a comment which can be distracting.
Perhaps making Upvotes & Downvotes more prominent like Reddit could have promoted a stronger focus on discussions. Or, going the Facebook route and adding 6 reactions to start with would have probably felt cleaner.
Anyway, glad to see Upvotes (or rather Thumbs Up) on the mobile site. I think I'll be using that one the most.
