Flashback: A decade of Samsung Galaxy S camera tech

05 June 2022
A lot has changed in the last decade - higher resolutions, more cameras, better lenses and more. Here is a quick look back at how far mobile tech has come.

Also in most cases, more mp comes with bigger sensor, maybe there is less of motivation to do the same with old resolution that was used?
And I bet there is advertising of 200 in the mix.

Weird not to include dual pixel autofocus into the article. It was one of the highlight for S7 camera.

108mp was always a big risk cus of the focus issues. HOWEVER, i fully think the S21 Ultra had the best camera samsungs ever made for a handset. The S22 Ultra is a bit underwhelming, still good, but i personally prefer the 21 Ultra

ShubhamDeshmukh, 05 Jun 2022I know Apple is finally doing 48MP, but you will be surpris... moreFirst things first, the 0.8 um that is shown is the 108mp equivalent. All these phones (including Apple, if they come with a 48mp sensor) will shoot in 12mp pixel binned mode. And the Samsung, in pixel binned mode, has a pixel pitch of 2.4 um (since it does Nonapixel Binning). If Apple uses the 48mp sensor in their next iPhone, it is also likely to have 2.4-2.8 um pixel pitch, so they are not that far apart. There are advantages to using a 108mp sensor too (depending on the situation).

One thing I will agree though, 200mp is not really necessary. They just need to keep improving the current 108mp HM3.

Even if they use 12mp as standard, it should improve detail more than quad Bayer. Big sensor also means more light, even if it's standard Bayer. Better 8K, lossless 2x, stacked hi res with standard Bayer sound also good.
Not to mention it might move Sony towards hi res sensors too which would be interesting, now if it will be 1IVR or 1VR or 0.

S10 had dual aperture as well

                  DRAM
                  DOL-HDR

Multi aperture was great, it's better small for video and big for photo, or also small for all in focus photo.
4K was then rarity also in pro field, the same as 8K is now, being able to use it to record some memories is insane considering it's real worth.
Same with hi res raws, even if on small sensor it can get closer to pro cameras in terms of detail, unlike having only 12Mp.
Actually the best 8K I seen was from S20+ having 64mp, it's like every frame is a still picture and of course it is, if even if poor, it's 32mp.

But they no longer use this tech. Wasnt worth using just for slow motion, since samsung does not care about action shots.

                        52mm is not a telephoto.
It has to be at least 80mm.
Only the periscope is telephoto here.

Yikes, it’s been 10 years since the S3!!!!!

I feel like I should have already known that, but seeing it written on screen hammers home the fact. I remember going into my local carphonewarehouse store to pick up my pre-ordered S3, they had issues getting the blue one I’d ordered so I could either wait, or take a white one instead. Doesn’t feel like a decade has passed since then, time goes too fast these days……

Hence really excited for that. Hope Samsung takes a page out of Apple's approach once 48MP arrives, and realise that 200MP is not worth it.

I love my S2, it was a beast at that time! It is still alive, but battery is not good...age did the thing.

I don't know, the cameras on the Exynos variants have almost always been a complete abomination and the image quality has been taking a nosedive since Galaxy S21 series.

ShubhamDeshmukh, 05 Jun 2022Samsung needs to understand that tiny pixel-binning alone i... moreIronically enough, Apple is moving towards Quad Bayer this year, with iPhone 14 Pro presumably having a 48MP main sensor. iPhone's strong low light performance is largely due to its extremely effective image stabilisation, allowing for a total of 10 seconds of combined exposure time when handheld - but even then the noise reduction destroys all the fine details unless you're shooting in ProRAW.

I agree with you on the fact that Samsung should've used GN2 on its own flagships, though.

You don't even have to text phones every year. Because the difference is almost un noticeable... Two years or three. Only then can you see the improvement... Every year. That's very little

Samsung needs to understand that tiny pixel-binning alone is not helping. Anything below 1.0um is weak. Apple is proving that exact point by going in the opposite direction, with 12MP 1.9um large pixels compared to 1.7um of previous gen that capture more dynamic, depth, vibrant images. Having large pixels especially help in low light where Apple iPhone 13Pro absolutely throws the competition out of the water. The benefits are dynamic image, more details, without grainy noise.

Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra is another excellent example. They took both larger 1.4um pixels combined with 4:1 pixel binning, to have best of both worlds with 50MP camera, which is by far the most stunning camera system the world has ever seen. Ironically, this is Samsung's GN2 50MP 1/1.12" sensor, that Samsung themselves refuse to put on their flagship phones!

I only wait with pessimistic exasperation when they say they want a 200MP camera on their phone for the next flagship, how wrong!!
