I'm waiting for 5g dumb phones

The Android Freak, 06 Jun 2022Moto Edge + 2022 is great for picking up signals on Verizon... moreThe flagship Motos have 512GB max storage and no headphone jack. I wouldn't be able to use the phone for mobile backup storage and I'd have to buy a pile of USB-C headphone jack adapters. It's probably easier to root and fix the Sony Xperia 1 III once the Android 12 kernel is out.

T-Mo lists the Sony Xperia 1 III as having extended range 5G support, which is weird because that's disabled. It's very much dead when it only has NR 71.

I live about 20 miles from a well-covered city. Until 5g came to our area, even phone coverage was spotty. Now, while not lightning speedy, 5g allows for internet including video. It's a compelling reason to upgrade IMHO.

i couldnt care less about 5G. its unessecary

My T-Mo LG Velvet 5G got SA 5G and VoNR a long time ago. It works a lot better than NSA 5G phones. When you're at the edge of reception and have only 1 bar on one band, 5G will be usable while LTE won't. For some mountainous areas, that meant that the edge of usable signal extended by at least 50 miles.

It even makes a difference in suburbs. My Xperia 1 III (no SA 5G) likes LTE 66 + NR 71. As soon as I walk into a deadspot of LTE 66, it's completely disabled and hunting for another LTE band. It might take it a minute or two to recover. The older Velvet 5G is typically on three bands at once and it's fine with having only LTE or only 5G.

The Sony is nice and fast at running apps but its cell performance is garbage. I bring the LG when I travel.

Just look how badly they are struggling to still push the VR and it's still this super niche segment very few actually care about. And VR isn't even new. Industry has been trying to push VR since the late 80's! It's just too specific, too limited.

5G NSA that rely on 4G infrastructure will still be an option for countries still locked on 4G or just establishing 5G network though, thus the complete sunset of 4G LTE won't be seen at least in the near future (less than 5 years from now)

EE in the UK has had this feature on by default since they rolled out 5G two years ago. Most 5G phones with SD870 or better are compatible.
