Rumor: the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 will have a very unusual 1+2+2+3 CPU configuration

09 June 2022
The SM8550 chip will allegedly feature a mix of new cores (Cortex-X3 and A720) and old cores (A710 and A510).

All this is irrelevant unless Qualcomm fixes the heat problem found in Snapdragon 8 Gen 1.

Its the 980 now according to your last comment. But at the time the sd was stable too, or maybe you were just ignorant and thought qualcomm has been overheating since sd 810?

The 510 are crucial for efficie... morein-order cores are terribly outdated for flagship CPU in 2022. maybe in 2012, but not today. there's a reason why Apple's efficiency cores are twice faster than A55, and yet at the same time use only half of the power.

the only reason why Arm keeps A510 around, or manufacturer still use it, is because it's a very small core. in chip manufacturing, size matters a lot, especially if your products is an SoC.

But so were the competing sd 855 and 865. If you want to compare your good old rock stable kirins with the overheating sd chips, go with the 9000, thats where sd started to get trashy.

just ditch A510 cores as it's useless on flagship. 2*X3 and 4*A720, just like Apple's chip. size would increase a few mm2 but performance gain would be huge.

also, don't cheap out on cache size. there's only so much performance you'd get from yearly architectural improvement. start working on a real performance gain through cache size.
