Flashback: a decade of Xiaomi battery and fast charging tech

12 June 2022
Xiaomi is a huge fan of fast charging - at least when it comes to wired charging. Fast wireless solutions may have began to fall out of favor.

Mike0902, 13 Jun 2022Why the obsession with super fast charging? My Poco F3 came... moreMy phone also comes with 67w fast charger.. What can I do now? Is it okay or should i go for a 33w?

Xiaomi has evolved significantly when it comes to battery charging. The 120W charging is mind blowing, it charges your phone from zero percent to a hundred in less than 20 minutes. Basically you just have to charge your phone before going to the bathroom, take a bath and voila, 100% in less than 30 minutes.

Would loved if you put heat while charge in that segment cause as long as i know wireless charging produce a hotter temperature compare to wired. Heat is the result of an inefficiency.

I am very happy with my Redmi Note 10 and its 5000 mAh battery. Xiaomi is the only brand I buy from since 2014.

Apple and Samsung still at ~25W thats a joke

SShock, 13 Jun 2022I have 95% battery health after 3,5 years on my iPhone. So?... moreNot sure whether your measurement accurate, no such claim also from Apple about batt endurance. The truth is that battery will degrade after certain cycles reached, even coming from the best factory (Sony, Panasonic, Energizer, etc).

Xiaomi's batt will indeed degraded but not so bad, I would say 80% after ~2 years. The good thing is that (official) replacement very easy, fast and cheap so no brainer here.

I'm far more interested in what Xiaomi did with the Mi 10 Ultra by using a graphene-enhanced battery. I wonder why Xiaomi doesn't use it anymore. I'm totally happy to take better battery tech over three-digit charging that only makes the battery super hot and greatly lowers its life expectancy. Even to this day, anything over 50W is still an overkill.

Mike0902, 13 Jun 2022Why the obsession with super fast charging? My Poco F3 came... moreHuh? My Poco F3 came with a 33W charger. :O

Anonymous, 13 Jun 2022You are an iZombie if you believe the battery health indica... moreIt hasn't changed because I still get the same (or at least unnoticeable difference) battery life out of same charge. I do only charge it to 80% since I bought it which greatly helps the battery health. That 80% charge gives me around day and a half of my use which is plenty.

I did not care that much about fast charging until I tried the 30W included with the Mi Note 10 Lite.
Now with the 120W 11T Pro, I fail to see why anyone would complain about battery life or the fact it does not have the pointless wireless charging.

In all seriousness, I'm joking. Buy yourself a USB charge meter and you can then accurately test the mAh capacity with the phone switched off 0-100%.

As always all that matters is price.
In case of xaomi everyone gers great quality for affordable price.

Ra-Iri, 13 Jun 2022Yes, I agree that tech companies sure do have implementatio... moreIn honesty, they don't. They have safeguards in place so it doesn't go up in flames, but they literally want to sell you ridiculous charging rates so it degrades battery faster and most people buy a new phone over replacing battery. And companies are banking on that, especially most Android ones whose whole business model is just shoving as many models out the door as possible. Really only one that don't are Apple and Samsung. Everyone is whining over their charging speeds, but they are also the only ones who in general provide their devices with longer life cycle as whole (which is also reflected by way longer software support). And they tend to last longer battery life wise. And if you take some more care, even more (like enabling charge limit to 85% on Samsung phones should significantly extend battery life time), often up to 2x as longer just by not charging it to full every time.

My concern is that people in tropical countries who do not have access to favorable conditions; the heat from that charging will degrade the battery so much.

Right now in Philippines, I am at an ambient temp of 38°C, and if I charge a 120w phone right now, pretty sure it will be burning hot.

Still, I think we need an energy-efficient phone. Imagine a 4000 mah battery running all-day even in hard use; that's a huge leap for me.
