perhaps 2022 phones are just boring, minimal upgrades over their predecessors... evem the camera hardware are basically the same

The only thing that is moving phones is 5G. Not enough operators are embarrassing it yet. So the new phones are not needed yet. In America it is a mess with the 5G rollout and phone compatibility. The operators are making whitelist and forcing users to upgrade their phones. If something like that happen in Europe the people would protest in the poorer countries. I know that in America the operators are giving out credits and free phones, but the operators are taking away the choice of using phones from other markets. It also hurts people that travel. People end up with only using an IPHONE on their trips.

Anonymous, 18 Jun 2022EASY: 1. New flagships cost more than my Microsoft Surface... moreyeah my pixel 5 is very impressive phone too,

Worst 1: Smartphones are going to be headache.
Price 2: 1500$ or over that just for more rom and ram.
Fact 3: we do have better option from 2018-2021 Ohh.

There hasn't been any innovation nor any respectable performance and camera improvement in the past 2 years, particularly phones that are under $600-$700. There are not many reasons to upgrade.

the fact that a modern flagship smartphone costs over £1100 now from the big players, and the rest are catching up fast, people are keeping their phones longer, and given the current global situation its forcing people to give up some of their material choices, i also hear streaming companies are taking a large hit as people cancel their subscriptions, so its across the board in 2022

                  EASY:
                  1. New flagships cost more than my Microsoft Surface Pro 8 (including the keyboard) = UNACCEPTABLE
                  2. My Note 9 has more gimmics (health sensors, sd card, etc) than the S22 Ultra (which again is more expensive than my already expensive laptop / tablet 2in1), therefore I concur with all those posters saying that upgrades are not worth it any more. Manufacturers have to come up with real innovations and not minor improvements, if they are after our cash
                  3. 40 Euro battery replacement of my Note 9 (rooted - custom rom) and another 40 for my Sony Z5 (rooted - LOS), and will keep me going until Fold5 comes around (or whicever model will really worth an upgrade). TBH, the only one I would consider would be a Sony, but they lack the s-pen
                  4. Cost of living has gone sky-high and salaries are more or less the same as before. Therefore the net income has decreased. People now have other priorities than upgrading their phone just for the sake of it
Note: see 2 above: If I ever feel like taking a picture of the moon, I would rather use my Sony Alpha 6100 with the 55-210 zoom lens, lol

The only real reason is , speaking as a european. All phones are now crap, visually and no innovation. Once they start doing under display cam e.g. samsung , thing will change for the bettet again.. until then people dont need a new phone each year., not same old look.

Also covid or war has nothing to do with it. Useless analytics, just like politics.. they just want our money and they see they cant so now they try to blame everything else.

Hardly surprising is it? Its the same with pretty much all technology, TV's, Laptops, you name it, the market is saturated with increasingly more durable devices, and minor incremental upgrades aren't going to get the masses clamoring to upgrade.

hmm, 17 Jun 2022Sorry but isn't it logical that A33 would be coming wi... moreI said lot of things there, updates was one of them. Its not just about android 11 and 12 its about 5 vs 3 years of software support.

Definetely someone who own A52 can upgrade to A33 he will upgrade perfomance and lot of quality of life features like 5G, Faster 4G speed etc.

Except some few geeks who like to change or try new models from time to time (me included), majority of people keep their phones for 2-3 years. Also, the current state of Europe makes people think twice when buying new stuff or new gadgets.
Also, in recent times you tend to get similar or even inferior phones, but with higher prices. Especially with Chinese phones.
This two are the most logical explanations to me.

Hemedans, 17 Jun 2022A33 has exynos 1280 which is better than sd 720G in A52, ... moreSorry but isn't it logical that A33 would be coming with Android 12 when it's 1 year newer phone then A52 ? Pretty much same with everything on it.

I understand when the comparison would be on the same year and month model and not 1 year apart. Like why would anyone buy a phone that cost something 300 euro and it be already year old when Samsung promise 3 years of android update that means you get only 2 years with 1 year old phone.

Why? 1) Unbelievable prices even though there aren't any major advances in technology. 2) Unbelievable prices even though there are less features than before (led light, sd slot, headphone jack, charger etc). 3) No loyalty programs or ridiculous ones. If I had the ability to pay a small amount and upgrade to a new device, I would do it. But... new Samsung flagships cost around 800-1500 euros and just next year Samsung buys them back for 350-750... which is TRAGIC! Edit: I read the rest of the comments and almost everyone has the same complains. Manufacturers don't listen to consumers for years, only targeting profit. I think now that they are seeing reduced sales, it might be the right time to start paying attention to consumers.

That is w... morePersonally, I am interested ONLY into high-end flagship phones (no flagship killers) that HAVE the SD card slot. If it's not present, I simply don't want to know what are the rest of the specifications. I don't care if it lasts a week or if it can levitate! No SD card slot = NO BUY!
Because I am biased (it's my right), I only like Samsung and Sony. No other brands. Samsung lost me as a customer by removing the SD card slot, so my only option left is Sony's Xperia 1 III or 1 IV.
Yup, all of this just for the SD card slot. The 3.5mm jack really is a bonus.

My S10 still works good and I don't see the point upgrading to pathetic S22. Smartphone development pace has decreased. If you are fine with older chipset - there is no point upgrading, because everything else is pretty much the same. Except huge price tags :)

I am holding buying a new phone, because I have to pay 500+ euros for what I paid 200 euros three years ago.

Seriously, the Samsung A40 three years ago had a compact body, amoled, 3.5mm jack and microsd. Now the cameras have gotten dirt inside them and the fingerprint reader is not working, and I am looking for a new phone. Closest comparisons are Xiaomi 12X or Sony 10 IV, over 500 euros both. Tried to buy a "new" older phone, but it was refurbished with 500 battery cycles, not trusting the gray market these days.

I can live without sd (if enough internal memory) and with a usb-c to 3.5mm adapter, but i refuse to have a phone over 70mm wide. All new phones seem to be 6.6-6.7 inch dopplegangers, I know that smaller cheaper phones might be niche, but surely it is big enough niche that some company should try to get into it.
