And people will definitely prefer watching small movies on v.r headsets rather than going to a movie theater. Why? They are already watching them now on tablets and phones.

Pedz, 04 Jul 2022I cant believe people thinking VR is a gimmick or not going... moreVR is with us for more than five years and still it has seen no wide adoption. Why would it, anyway? It is something people try and throw away, because it is very limited for wearing. A phone can be carried anywhere, VR headset not. People don't use it even at home, and that won't change.
There's no "Ready Player One" coming...

Pedz, 04 Jul 2022I cant believe people thinking VR is a gimmick or not going... moreYou said it, it requires decades to be availabe for everyone and get refined enough.
This poll then is useless, and those who are not believing in it have all the right to.
          This is way too early.

If it came as fashionable, as thin as it gets glasses with see through screens, which you could use on streets to navigate or play console game, it would be like console and phone alternative worthy buying.
It could start easily at 2000€, but it shouldn't be hard to make it like for 500€ later, with some downgraded features.
Why see through? It's to make it more social than classic VR, at least to TV like standard where you can see other person talking to you.
Well, using cameras to see would be alternative too. I would enjoy 3rd person view too.

I cant believe people thinking VR is a gimmick or not going to be mass adopted or fail.
VR is not the NEXT big thing. It is the big thing NOW. You just cant see it yet. expect somthing this big to happen in a few years? No. It takes decades for the tech to mature.
But when it does, you are gonna be a freeguy my friend ;)

Hurdles to overcome the gimmick of VR.

                1. Lightweight - It has to be lightweight and not feel hot when wearing for some time..

                2. No controllers - You need to be able to "touch and interact" with your interfaces, so unless the controller provide force sensitive feedback.. its useless.

                3. Compatible Applications - Oh.. That have to be games! But i do not think so, unless there is fun things to do (And it has to compete with other gaming platforms). I do believe it should be geared towards simulation and prototyping. Stuff like operation, model making, 3d creation, writing, drawing, driving. Media / Social / Calls will be like a sideline, in a Picture in picture mode.

I'm really optimistic about Playstation VR.
I don't have a Playstation nor do I intend to buy one.
But it's a mainstream device that is going to show that the "hassle" of being connected with a cable is worth it for a premium VR experience. Wheras people who bought the Quest played with it for a bit before leaving it to collect dust, console gamers are going to play some great games and experiences and start demanding that all of thier fav games includes have some amount of VR Support.
As a bonus many of the games built for PSVR will likely come to PC at some point too as they might as well and there is even a chance peeps will managed to hack the headset to work on PC too.

I think VR is the future, but to reach a somewhat believable picture we'd need AT LEAST 4k @ 120hz with decent image quality. According to rumors, next-gen GPUs should be able to handle that in many cases. But we'd also need VR headsets capable of such feats (preferably with OLED or microLED displays), which are in prototype stage at best (Meta showed some prototypes recently).

As for AR - it's a fiddly toy, IMO, that isn't worth much. It can be either "a screen in front of your face 24/7", which is quite tiring, or it can be "added layer of reality", which requires an insane amount of processing power (but less than VR, IMO) to handle the smallest movements of the camera, to render and properly position 3d objects on screen, and is just "VR Lite" experience, IMO. I prefer full VR experience instead.

And there's the theoretical possibility of a "full-dive" VR with a computer-brain interface, but we're not there yet, as far as I know. Sounds like the most interesting tech but will depend completely on implementation.

As it stands right now, both VR and AR are rather niche products that cannot be popular. Partly because technology isn't good enough to make it really immersive, partly because it is so damned expensive, partly because there's simply not enough content for it.

Right now it's just a niche segment. Maybe in 5-10 years it will cover more ground. Especially if they focus on the smartphone industry. Also, the quality on smartphones compared to dedicated devices is very low. Whomever said 4k displays on smartphones are just a gimmick never tried VR.

I adore technology. Doesn't matter if I use them or not. But I mostly love computers/laptops and smartphones. Also I die for music. That's why I have 8 pair of earbuds/headphones.

K, 04 Jul 2022I think AR and VR headsets are the next big thing.Here'... moreWell, let me correct some of your big mistakes.
People need to buy new devices... true, but they need devices with practical use, not some one-purpose toys. The popularity of smartphones is in their extremely wide range of use for everyone, combined with perfect portability. No headset can do that.
Entertainment? If all your life is by yourself, maybe. But otherwise people are social, and if they watch a movie, the last thing they need is isolating themselves from the others.
VR may be good for gaming, but that's all. AR will have its use in development and production, but it is useless in common life.

Maybe it is just you 'hoping' it fails.

The Metaverse is already failing, people are not going to work all day there, it's like they took the cubicle and strapped it on your face. It will be like blinders on a horse, blocking out what is real, depressing, slavery. It's bad enough that we have people, mostly kids playing games all day, not understanding how to act in society. People with their face glued to a 6.1 inch screen thinking that's life. It's only to enslave you.

I think standalone(which could get internet connection and notifications calls etc from phone at the start because battery life of the headset is an issue) AR headset which could be used as VR headset is the next big thing.

Meta is going to release developer version in 2024 which will have emg sensor in wrist which will enable typing without keyboard and in 2026 there should be consumer version which will be affordable priced(much less than flagship phones) which could give one day battery life(for mixed usage)

I hope other companies are going to jump into AR market before it is all Meta, that is their game plan, make foundations for VR, AR and "Metaverse" and when it is next big thing other companies have to rely on Meta for making profit on the market.

I am so itching for AR headset that i have bought Quest 2 and thinking about buying simple smart glasses(which could be used for notifications, navigation and watching tv series and movies and other simple tasks) when there will be good one which will be connected to my phone without wires.

I think AR and VR headsets are the next big thing. Here's why:

                                  1) Four or five years down the line smartphone market will become saturated. Companies will need new products to stay afloat. T.V market will become saturated too. So they will develop and push a.r/ v.r

                                  2) People will also need new electronic gadgets to buy time to time. And when they get bored of smartphones they will buy a.r and v.r headsets.

                                  3) V.R headsets are not only for gaming. They will also provide a movie-theater watching experience and also good desktop working experience. So people will buy these instead of new t.v's and desktops/laptops.They will also probably stop going to theaters for small movies.

                                  4) A.R and V.R headsets will get much much better in everyday and cheaper, so their adoption won't be a problem also because of above reasons.

Heck, by this time next year with cambria and apple headsets released, I doubt people will even be wondering about the future of a.r, v.r headsets.

VR will definitely become the prefered way for entertainment and long distance communication. It is just a matter of time. It is very attractive to be able to be completely transported into a new environment from the comfort of your home
