01 July 2022
This is only the second time in the last ten years that the figure has dropped below 100 million units for the period.

Yesterday I bought a case for my almost 5 years old iPhone 8 Plus. This case has the same style like the latest iPhones, it is made of aluminum in midnight blue with flat sides and makes my iPhone looking like a new iPhone. The 8 plus is still such a good phone, fast, smooth, battery has now dropped to 76 % but I can still make it through the day, I don't find any reason to upgrade. Some of my friends who like Android thought I was mad to have spend almost 1000 dollar for a phone back in 2017 when I purchased the 8 plus. All of them had to upgrade their mid ranged Androids due to lag and "unusability" several times during the last 5 years, spending a lot more than what I spent to get mine. I will keep using my plus for some more years. I hope iOS 16 won't make it slower, though.

Free government money is gone, everything is going to slow down across all industries.

I've bought my Samsung A52 in November as my S6 Edge was annoying with laggy interface and weak battery. And finally low volume for my high end Jabra Elite 85t earbuds forced me to buy a new phone. A52 is pretty good. One UI is truly amazing. Battery life is loooooooong.

xocomaox, 01 Jul 2022At four years you miss out on some great promotional trade-... moreMy sister here (not USA) traded in her S8 bought in 2018 for Flip 3.
        S8 + paying 65% Flip 3 price = Flip 3 + galaxy watch (latest model).
Phone was in very good conditions, but screen very red.

She plans to do it every 2 years.

Phones have gotten so good the last 5 years that upgrading isn't as necessary. And our different needs from them are shrinking. Like I don't need a phone with a lot of internal storage or even microSD slot because all my photos and favorite movies and TV shows are on multiple Google Photos accounts while being uploaded by a Pixel 3. I get the unlimited storage saver option. And if it's not there, I can stream it from apps like Netflix and Spectrum TV.

My Motorola Razr 5G only has a Snapdragon 765G which is only as powerful as an 835 from 5 years ago. And I don't see myself having a problem using it for the next 5 years or longer! That means I'm using a 2017 flagship SoC for a decade and have no problem using it for that long. Plus, I'm just tired moving all my content from one phone to another. They're essentially all the same. It's getting tiresome like MCU or any cookie-cutter superhero movie.

Phones will never leave that impact to me like the first iPhone from 15 years ago. It's just more of the same every year. Nothing revolutionary. Phones are already perfected.

Anonymous, 01 Jul 20223-4 At four years you miss out on some great promotional trade-in offers in the US. It's just too long, especially since a lot of manufacturers aren't putting out updates for that long.

as phone prices increase, more and more people will simply not renew year on year or even 2 years given the current global problems, the iPhone series for example are highly expected to increase their handset prices by $100 this September citing increased costs blah blah, when does a $450 phone need to be sold at $1249 for the pro max variant? this will no doubt travel across the industry for other manufacturers

Nothing to do with Covid or inflation and everything to do with the the phones being released are garbage. Many of which are downgrades from the 2021 predecessors

I love how they contradict themselves in the same paragraph. Inventory is building up, and magically, because supply improve, sales in the next months will improve too !

Well people simply don't buy new phone every single year.

I hope more users that comment on tech sites keep their phones for at least 20 months, it is not worth getting new phone every year just because they think new SoC will be better for silly games when quality a 2022 flagship runs it is same provided by 2020/2021 flagships.
