It is an welcome decision. Price! It hardly matters when people go for pricey smart phones with miniscule sensor. Mirror less are of different class altogether. It is a kind of difference between CCD and CMOS sensors. People go on accumulating older cameras mostly due to sentimental attachment. Moreover the resale price is nominal and does not contribute to the upgradation. It is a matter of time as the new generation of photographers have no idea about film roles and the developing nuances because they have learnt photography through smart phones. It is better to embrace the newer advances and timely offloading the vestigial heavy chunks.

Mirrorless Nikon Cameras must be affordable to all, eventhough every professional dream to own a Mirrorless it is price that stopping them to have Mirrorless in their kit, alternately Nikon Should consider an offer to exchange old DSLR for a Mirrorless, then automatically cost will come down and affordability will increase, I am a Nikon user for the last 50 years, enjoyed and shot my Editorial & Cine assignments on F-3,FE-2,FM-2 and other models,so Nikon should think seriously to announce old DSLR to Mirrorless Models Exchange, automatically Mirrorless sales volume would be pick-up.

I'm confused, I read that just 5 days ago, Nikon said they were discontinuing their lower end DSLR's and focusing mostly on mirrorless and higher end DSLRs, and the only cameras getting discontinued were the D3500 and D5600.

In a professional set-up, sports/action photographers mostly have multiple bodies and battery grips in order to both avoid running out of power and for having the option to have more lenses ready to upon. With regards to video, a professional set-up costs more than most people spend on smartphones in a lifetime. You won't be seeing anyone being paid for reliable captures run around with a video-capturing DSLR, let alone a smartphone.

Smartphones far surpass the tier 2k mirrorless cameras, even more if you count in IA and Night mode where to get the same results in a mirrorless you have to shot at F1.4 at average to high iso producing noise in the pictures.

Still do not get how it is possible that even in 2022 mirrorless cameras still do not match smartphone in terms of IA and image stacking... Not even beating them in video....

Anonymous, 14 Jul 2022and yet company like nikon stop making dslrsThe move from mirrored reflex systems to mirrorless isn't because of anything other than , faster shooting, prolonged longevity of hardware, smaller compact dimensions, etc
Mirrored systems wear out usually quicker than mirrorless ...and SLR cameras in general have advanced more than just this one time in thier life span.
Every company has to diversify and evolve if they want to stay relevent , full fledged cameras will always have a place in photography , regardless of what some might think.

And it is a personal preference in which format or device you choose to capture the world around you.
I have decades of experience with cameras from 35mm point and shoot, kodak instants, 35mm SLR, DSLR, medium format, range finders ..I have loved them all ....and I now love using mobile snappers, it's adds spur of the moment opportunities , fun and social sharing made easy.

Regardless of where photography tech goes in the future, I hope I get to enjoy it every moment I am alive.

Anyway, professional quality cameras don't "heat up" they don't do a lot of prosessing, you're thinking of phone cameras that have to do that, because they lack capabilities of a real camera. If you shoot with a camera that uses film there is no prosessing at all, it comes down to light, lens and exposure time. Digital cameras kind of work the same way. I actually know a professional fashion photographer that still uses film because she thinks digital cameras are junk. She stated this in an article in Vogue magazine. She usually shoots in a studio, with lights but I know professionals who shoot out doors and they bring lights, or reflectors, four or five different types of lens. The prosessing is done after shooting on a computer with PhotoShop or or something. Please explain why phone cameras now shoot Raw files?

It's not perfect to the sides, nor perfect on pixel lvl, it got more detail tho.
Shot on vivo tho. Can imagine some brands having that hi res as gimmick, but they shoot low res with more detail anyway, it's not useless anyway.

                            12s Ultra has 1in , like Sharp.
Both cannot defeat quality of RX100.

Only the fact they use plastic elements is already huge disadvanted against cameras.
If plastic was any good as glass (only advantage is weight and price), then cameras, microscopes would use plastic lenses.

Increasing sharpening to make texture better than it is cant solve this issue. Nor increasing contrast nor making shadows brighter than they are.

Does matter if phone is from brand A, B or C. Compact cameras are miles ahead.

No p... moreLol, there is a lot of ways to counter size like with resolution(64mp/108mp vs 25mp), stacking(to improve detail, remove noise, increase dynamic range), using multiple sensors(to counter limitation of one sensor size using multiple), which is not so often in full size cameras. Of course you cannot compare them to full frame in quality yet. Difference is getting smaller tho in recent years.
Still remember cameras having 20mp when phones were on vga or 2mp, now we got 200mp coming, even with all its downsides, amount of detail in raw will be not as in meager 25mp lvl. We could have 2mp/12mp with big pixels, but would having colors be better than having detail and tuned colors using other sensors and AI?
                                  truly lol

Smartphones will take pictures from DSLRS from whatever online gallery, archive / source etc

Then combine the photo taken on the smartphone and take a picture that doesn't even exist

And that fake photo will have more detail than any physical real picture.. that's the level we are at now

And the rate of growth for computational processing is growing faster than how well we can optimize cameras physically
