Not only dot projector doesn't care about the ambient lighting since it's IR, the fact you're raising phone in front of your face means the display will fire up automatically, illuminating your face just enough with display light for regular camera to pickup state of your eyes and other visual parameters that are not checked by dot projector part. Not once I had issue with FaceID on XR in pitch black darkness and it's essentially first generation of FaceID which was introduced with X series (XR came with XS which was a refresh for X series).

Of course not forgetting to label everything as a spectacular innovation from Apple.
Sorry but if this phone wouldn't have the apple logo on the back ... people would not buy more than 10% the current volumes.
Fascinating how human brains gets manipulated.

For me it’s been working 99.99% times, but i have 13 Pro. Don’t sure what you have done if your Face ID doesn’t work in very dark environment because been dark or even pitch black have zero effect how Face ID works, it uses infrared just like your tv remote. If you mean at night when you go to sleep etc. You propably put your phone too close to your face so it can’t scan your face, so the problem is not the darkness.

This sounds quite low, no wonder why so many complaining their display scanners

Literally most common complaint I see regarding Apple phones is that they feel jabby in the hand, I don't see such issues for other blocky looking phones.

On comparison, I never had big issues with fingerprint readers. Especially physical ones. But, even the in display ones, worked in 9 out of 10 times flawlessly. And they are equally secured.
Like I said, Apple introduced Face ID like a nice featured with iPhone X. But, in time, they didn't want to put other options because of their pride and because they didn't want to be the same like Android phones.
How can I give my hard earned money again to this company? When they never ever think about their customer wishes. Well, now to be a little bad, many Apple customers don't have too many wishes to begin with. That's why Apple can do whatever they want. The sh**p will follow blindly and willingly. Lol.

They don’t want to implement fingerprint scanner because they already have Face ID which is winning scanner. Android boys been saying years that Apple will ditch face ID and yet it haven’t happened because well Face ID is so much better. Apple even got it working with masks!

you have to suffer, 15 Jul 2022if you have s21, good luck not using the face unlock. someo... moreWhy would anyone use face unlock on Android phones, when there are very secured and capable in display fingerprint readers? Or physical fingerprint readers for lower end models.
And contrary to what some Apple fanboys will say, they work in 99% of the time. I had more misses with my Face ID on my past iPhone 12 (especially in very dark places; not to mention when wearing masks), than I do/did with any other Android phone fingerprint reader.
So yeah, Apple should put other options for unlocking the phone. But, of course, because of their pride, they will never do that.
Good luck to all current and future iPhone users, who needs to accept whatever Apple is doing, without having any other options. I actually pity them.
