How much Xiaomi is involved in the design could vary from product to product. Xiaomi doesn't have their own manufacturing facilities though so this is all carried out out by other companies. For their phones they do not design or manufacture the majority of them. Around 70% of their phones are dssigned and manufactured by ODM companies. Basically, this is nearly all their Redmi/Poco models. They design their own flagship Xiaomi branded models. They are currently building their own manufacturing plant though for high end phones so in the future we'll probably see them manufacturing their own high end models. I mean, I've seen similar with our domestic brand that made their big appliances in own factories and outsourced all the small appliances, but still, I thought Xiaomi makes that stuff too and I never really found any other off brand having same devices as Xiaomi.

Basically for their household electronics products other companies design and make them and Xiaomi just stick their logo on them. According to this article the car will be designed by an third party so not by Xiaomi at all. Maybe Xiaomi might br more involved in software like Huawei but that remains to be seen
