SShock, 16 Jul 2022The touch control idiocy. I can't believe companies li... moreJust like new laptops. they're lighter and faster, but they as well miss many keys laptops had
five years ago, let alone CD/DVD, full sized SD slot, LAN, etc. In these 'productivity oriented' PCs you need to combine different keys to access some functions the older ones had integrated into one key.

                            What they don't make now...

It's funny seeing how everyone is super defensive about Xiaomi phones whenever you complain over anything they do wrong, but here everyone is mocking Xiaomi for a thing that will most likely actually be good. If they don't go bonkers with the absurd "touch everything" trend. Xiaomi actually has really good appliances and other non smartphone devices. Car is whole different thing, but still, it's one thing where I'm actually quite optimistic.

otis, 16 Jul 2022I miss classic cars where there were buttons for important ... moreThe touch control idiocy. I can't believe companies like VW and Mercerdes looked at touch controls and said "Yes, this makes absolute sense because it's convenient and benefits user". Instead we get idiocies like touch controls on steering wheel like on VW Golf where you brush against it while driving (because it's positioned on the edge of steering wheel) and change settings of car unintentionally.

And something I can't fathom who was the genius (idiot really) who thought touch controls were good for A/C. Or worse, put them all on a big "infotainment" touch screen further away from user with zero physical feedback. I have older car with manual A/C controls and they are the best thing ever. I can control it without ever looking at it. Or if I have to just barely glance at it. Or if I'm too cold, I slightly nudge the temperature knob towards warm. If still too cold, I do it some more. Fans blow too much, I just rotate a giant knob I can reach towards without looking by one notch that physically gives a haptic click when I reach next speed. It's just 2 rotating knobs, one for fan speed and one for temperature. To pick direction of air, there are few buttons, but they are laid out well and I know exactly where they are without looking as I use rotating knobs for orientation. And you don't change those much anyway.

In 1 year old SUV with fancy "automatic" A/C, it still has physical buttons, thank god, but to change temperature, I need to rotate the knob and observe the temperature setting on a display next to it. You can't just know how much you set it by rotation, you need to look at display. If setting is too low temperature it'll kick fans into maximum speed to reach lower temperature faster. And if you are bothered by loud fans, you need to turn them down. By first finding two buttons in the middle of the row of bunch of other buttons that have a small and large fan printed on them for lowering and increasing fan speed. And as you're pressing them, you need to observe the fan speed scale on the display where temperature is shown as well. It's absolutely insane how much unnecessarily fiddly and clumsy it is, not to mention requiring so much more attention from the user who is most likely actively driving.

And trend of this garbage touch controls will never stop, it'll just get worse. And I absolutely hate it. Everyone whining over safety while driving and then they put these death functions into cars and make them 100x more inconvenient than they were before. But it's cheap to slap a touch panel and program the buttons for whatever you want instead of designing and manufacturing 55 different physical buttons. And I hate it how they follow stupid Tesla's trends.

Every time you want to check your speed or fuel, you'll have to swipe away a few annoying AliExpress popups.

Maybe instead of prototyping cars, Xiaomi should finally prototype at least one good phone that isn't infested with junky ads in every system app.
