19 July 2022

At the end of the day, if they end up paying billions, they'll just pass it on to the consumers as all businesses do, except that they can raise prices by a lot more and their customers will still be willing to pay for it.

I don't understand how Apple charges the user. In my country, the banks will charge the outlets.

Anyways, we have a local payment company that found a solution to have NFC payments enabled for both Android & iOS.
They are using some sort of tags, that you tap with your mobile device. The tag will be connected to a POS.
Still waiting them to launch after getting regulated by the central bank.

I have a cheap Samsung A71 and use Samsung Pay for just about everything without problems. Last summer I was with a friend who gas an iPhone and we were in this small shop. I took out my phone to pay and he said "Your phone won't work here, they don't have the right device for that" I just held out my phone while smiling at him, as the payment went through. My Samsung Galaxy A71 and Samsung Pay work everywhere, while Apple pay and iPhones don't.

Here in Brazil almost all banks, debit and credit cards and fintechs are compatible with all big three digital wallets Apple Pay, Google Pay and Samsung Pay, I use SPay since I own a Samsung phone, but in my old Motorola I used GPay, I like the Samsung Pay more because it's the only one to offer a rewards program, I get to choose what wallet I want to use, Apple doesn't give any other option.

I agree that Apple should open the NFC for third party apps so the user get to decide what service to use, if that happened for sure Google and Samsung would launch their wallets for iOS, on the other hand Apple could launch Apple Pay for Android too.

LMAO..lawsuits like these always aimed at Apple are just so comical. Are banks actually complaining here or these law firms just trying to once again squeeze money out of a multi trillion dollar company?

Seriously, they want access to Apple’s customer base/market but now refusing to pay the fee? Crying it’s “monopolistic”…Apple created their market from scratch, they know their customer base is inarguably more valuable than Androids in terms of sheer average purchasing power. The other choice is Android, end of. Why are they forcing Apple to open up?

The only available system was from a single bank and of course it worked only on Android devices and it worked just fine. To this day, people in many countries still have to wait for Apple Pay to support at least one of their local banks to be able to use their iphone for payments.

You do realize you're literally praising a first party thing that's the same exact thing as Apple Pay. Right? But that's fine because NFC is open so all is fine. Even though 3rd party solution was awful and Google Pay isn't even officially supported in my country while Apple Pay is.

I used "wonderful" and "open" NFC on Android phone for payment in stores which was accessed through NFC app from my bank and it was utter unreliable garbage. Apple Pay on the other hand, works flawlessly every single time.

Only Apple doing it means they always do it exactly as it should be done and makes sure with payment processors that it works well. All 3rd parties using NFC externally don't really give a damn or they don't have resources to do it like Apple. You can call it monopoly and unfair all you want, but you can't deny it just works better because of tight and reliable control over the service.

I had that on Android via my bank's app. And it was god awful. It was so unreliable I had to carry a credit card with me unless I wanted to look like an absolute clown at the checkout because phone for whatever reason failed to chit chat properly with the POS terminal. Apple may have NFC locked to themselves, but at least the damn thing works unconditionally reliably. It just never fails and that's pretty important thing.

Looking forward to Apple paying a huge fine and finally providing access to NFC on iOS devices as it is done currently on Android.
