Apple faces potential class action lawsuit in the US over Apple Pay anticompetitive practices

19 July 2022
Apple allegedly "coerces" users of its phones, tablets and watches to use Apple Pay, which leads to excess fees for card issuers and reduced security for consumers.

[deleted post]Same could be said for all the "Anonymous" users in every Apple related article...

Anonymous, 19 Jul 2022Oh yeah I forgot to mention that, people bash Apple for ask... moreOf course, the user pays for it. All transaction fees are already built into the app / subscription fee. Visa / Master along with the bank charge 2.5% of the transaction. Apple wants a cut on that and the banks are crying now. Not saying apple is good, but neither are the banks.

GSMA User, 19 Jul 2022Just ban them like they orchestrated ban for Huawei Huawei has been caught several times in theft of technologies and information as well as straight up spying on individuals and organizations. It's what got them banned, not semi ethically questionable business practices.

Oh boy how quickly people rush to bash Apple and they don't even know how cards payment system even works...

I don't know about coercion, but most, if not, all banks charge a card transaction as Visa, Mastercard, etc is not free either. It's the price of convenience.

If Apple really IS pushing people to shove everything into the Apple Wallet, then this lawsuit is justified. Google has fees but they don't push. As someone below me eloquently said, other banks can make their own payment systems but then they have to maintain it, update security protocols, terms and conditions, etc. Is it worth it or just allow people to use the 4 methods of online payments in the US (Apple Pay, Google Pay, PayPal, soon-to-be Facebook Pay)?

Anonymous, 19 Jul 2022Just like Google Pay, Apple Pay charges per payment. But... moreOh yeah I forgot to mention that, people bash Apple for asking money for it but the user does not pay for it.

Apple Pay and Google Pay ask money per transaction, but the bank does pay that, for the user is is totally free.

Also not that strange, if I pay with my debit card (most common regular payment method) it does actually also cost money per EACH transaction, even more than Apple Pay or Google Pay ask.

It's just that banks cover it, so the user doesn't doesn't have to pay and this with a REGULAR debit card from a bank (again at least in my country)

The only payment method in my country where the user has to pay directly is a Credit Card, in my country there is always at least 50 cent to 1 euro per transaction and you as a user DO pay for that yourself.

Same online in stores from my country, just like with PayPal too.

Apple is always in the news for the wrong reasons.

"The rival services on Android charge nothing."

                      Depends

Google Pay does the same what Apple Pay does, it is not free.

However on Android there is still (read at bottom) that freedom that a bank can use their own App and do payments via that.

However the odd thing is that I see more and more banks go away from that due to the cost, you need to create own payment platform, keep it up to date so it stays safe, have servers running for it and so on, I remember having a discussion with few people from a bank that said "it does cost a ton of money compared to Apple Pay or Google Pay"

But why did most banks do that in the first place over here then? Because they had this idea that over time it would get cheaper, it didn't so all 9 banks in my country aside from 1 dumped their own payment method and went Google Pay on Android.

And a lot of people don't mention such details.

Of course rival services on Android charge nothing, they are data mining the hell out you!!

This is just Apple doing what the rest wish they were in a position to do....

And before any of you self professed brainic's out there start throwing your toys out of the pram and accusing me of defending Apple. Know this, I could care less what one multi billion dollar megacorp charges another, let them pay their armies of fat cat lawyers to fight it out in plush, air conditioned courts rooms for years on end.

I'm just going to carry on making use of the easy to use, convenient payment solution offered regardless........

Bebochekov, 19 Jul 2022Apple will not do anything without making something for it.... moreHere where I live, cashless transactions are usually all free. No charges on it regardless of using any app. No matter how small the amount is, it is always free.

I guess apple finally needs to be fined a few hundred billions. That should teach them to keep their enormous, humongous, ginormous money greed under control

I doubt anything will happen to them, they are a company run by democrats. they'll settle out of court.

Apple will not do anything without making something for it. I use Samsung Pay and it's totally free. Even my wife's credit card is free for 45 days and no charge from Samsung when she uses it on Samsung Pay.

BURN THE fruit logo company with a record-fine!

HopeFilledIdiot, 19 Jul 2022I didn't even know they charge a fee in every transact... moreWell, there is always Google Pay which I just learned isn't even supported in my country meanwhile Apple Pay has been for several years...

I didn't even know they charge a fee in every transaction... I thought Apple couldn't be worse but I keep proven wrong time and time again...

                                    Good lawsuit

                                    Stop supporting such organizations
