Flashback: a decade of Microsoft's failed attempts to conquer the phone market

When it comes to weird phones, I'm into them. I've been comparing Duo 1 vs. Duo 2 vs. Fold 3 vs. Find N vs. LG Wing for months on end. I already have what I feel is the two best foldable flip phones, best iPhone ever made in the SE1, and best Pixel ever made in the non-XL 3. I also still have my LG G5 which was a weird phone in its heyday with its modular design that flopped and was maligned by LG fans.
Between the Duos, Folds, Find N, and LG Wing, I always look at the Duos the most. Just something about having two displays just seems way more practical to me even if the Duo is just a secondary. LG is a dead horse. Wing has a 765G. What's the point getting that? Find N is stuck in China and I can't even change the launcher. Fold 3 seems smoother and more polished but I'm not into the tablets.
Real shame Microsoft didn't release the Duo 1 many years ago. Would be a very popular line of devices today. Microsoft wasted at least 5 years supporting their OS known as Windows Phone that was DOA.

Bold of you think that it's there to conquer. It's not even a player. License to deploy the os, lack of apps in their market place, weird UI (too squarish, Microsoft s***y style, caused by Steve Ballmer).

I had three Lumia phones myself (610, 630, 650). I truly loved the UI, there was nothing better.
But what killed Lumia and Windows on phones were constant changes in the management. First focusing on style "be like Apple", with wide range of products, both computer and mobile. Then came the "corporate first" line, focusing on cloud, services, high profit company markets, big data. Next line was "back to the roots", again more focus on software, OS, office products.
With this lack of long time strategy it could never work. People saw it and they were not dumb, why would they buy something with low chance for a future?
By the way, similar attitude made problems to Samsung as well back in the 2013-2015 or like that, when they didn't know which way to go.

They were short sighted. And they were fighting apple ios but their original fight was with android which they did not realise. Windows phone 7 & 7.5 users were left behind. Same was done again later for many wp8 & 8.1 users. W10 Mobile was looking good with Software but they were stubborn & hardware was not given much importance. W10 mobile needed powerful hardware. They scrapped hub that was another biggest mistake. Their unique UI was gone with w10 mobile update. Bugs all over the places. I miss the windows phone UI. Amoled Display made it look even more beautiful. RIP Nokia & Windows mobile.

Windows phone were really great, smooth and kind of stylish in their UI. I had one. It worked perfectly fine. Still miss windows UI.

The real reason between windows phone device is some people who belong to a certain ethnicity. They prevented microsoft from giving windows phone away for free like Google does with Android, so that it doesn't become a competition to Google. They also prevented microsoft from launching surface mini to prevent it from becoming a competition to android tablets.
They are also trying to kill the hololens

To Windows phone had the best ui. I used a low end lumia 525 back then and it was fantastic at the time. Some people I knew had the Lumia 520 and they loved it too but the lack of apps made is unusable.

Too bad that ultimately, the lack of apps and lack of Microsoft's vision and perhaps stubbornness killed Windows Phone. Even to this day, I believe Windows Phone easily had the best UI and offered the best "core" experience. It also had a lot of "advanced" quirks and features, like dark mode, that was available before iOS and Android, the widgets that even back in the day felt quite intuitive and fun to use, the minimalist design, etc etc. Would have been interesting to see how market shares and consequently the phone world itself would have looked like today had Windows Phone turned out to be successful...

i am really like windows phone interface, it's so modern and different. the animations is so fluid back in the days. the apps actually improved in windows 10 era, it's actually getting better, but low sales make microsoft decided not to continue the project.

Surface Duo 1 and 2 are devices that actual owners either truly love or truly hate or don't need. You don't know how many times I've read Reddit posts how people missed their SD1 or SD2 after switching to a Fold 3 or iPhone 13 Pro Max. Many of these Duo owners will state how they could never go back to a single screen phone after trying out a Duo.
Of course, we'll have hater comments from people who never owned it before. The same people who complains about every new phone out there or how phones became boring. But once a company tries to be different like Microsoft or Nothing, they will still get bashed for trying to be different.

Please come back, Microsoft. Those phones are lovely. I hate having to choose between Apple and Google, with barely any open source Android alternatives. The current cellphone market is stagnant.

I got myself an used 525 to try out as a secondary phone. It was fun playing with tiles like tetris. Updated from 7 to 8. Worked perfectly fine. Liked it. No led flash, no front cam. Then as an upgrade, got 550. Aside from hardware upgrade, this 550 is really disappointing....used for less than a year then back to Android...
