"People start to realize the importance of long term software support (minimum of 5 years)".

Samsung was already the #1 even with the worst support among the popular brands.
Even devices of S series used to earn new android by march/april of the next year. While motorola was updated by october.

Motorola still has same popularity from their google days, despite making worse phones (G series is huge mess) and giving just 1 or no updates to few devies.

Z, 29 Jul 2022I'm curious as to who is manipulating the smartphone m... more- Chinese brands have most of their sales in China/India.
            - Asus is not popular even in Taiwan. Looks like even HTC is still ahead.
            - Sony has majority of their sales in Japan/Taiwan/HK/Sweden
            - Huawei is almost dead outside China
            - Honor is not popular outside China
            - Motorola is only popular in USA/Brasil

Basically on Apple and Samsung are strong in almost all markets (Samsung is not popular in Japan and barely exists in China).
Hard to find markets when one of them has less than 15%.

Duopoly as usual, I get why samsung would be on top, but I still can't really get what's up with apple's doing. Despite their incremental updates as their annually showcase.

Also, Samsung and Apple are the most valuable phone brand compared to other random brands.

What a ban could do to a brand. Huawei completely vanished. Harmony OS would be big, people and fans said. Google would have a hard time without Huawei using Android, people said. Nonsense, Huawei vanished, they are gone. It's a zombie brand.

Average consumer is very much price sensiti... more"China and India might be the most populated countries, but USA and Europe make sales, because people are wealthier there. Then come South Korea and Japan, wealthy but small. Then China, India... rest of the world is irrelevant."

Hilariously clueless. The Chinese and soon to be Indian market have average selling prices much lower than richer countries because the lower end market segment pulls down the average however, on the high end segmentation the Chinese market is larger and pulls in more sales and revenue than South Korea, Japan and EU given their sheer size.

To me Apple's growth YoY despite releasing similar phones for years now is certainly the definition of unnatural. People really need to stop having this black-or-white thinking where Samsung and Apple are the only options.

For example, in the US, only three of the top 10 brands even sell there. Sure it's not as big of a market as China or India, but 330 million people is still large and a market where you can score some big profits due to it being wealthier. People in the US often buy their phones in installment plans and get subsidies for signing contracts...therefore, they don't get the sticker shock of purchasing $1000 phone all at once.

Rly, 29 Jul 2022I rly can't understand Samsung is on top this year, al... moreThe main bulk of units shipped by Samsung is the midrangers and low end phones and not the S22 series.

I work at a mobile shop and the currently most sold models are the A53 and A13.

And honestly the A53 is a pretty good bang for the buck. For 479€ you get a OIS camera, 120hz AMOLED and waterproofing IP67 certificate, which even the high end expensive xiaomi phones lack. (Xiaomi 12 pro). There is not a Chinese brand that offers all 3 of these at this price range.

The main problem you listed with the exynoss vs snapdragon performance is not really that important in a midranger since its a cheaper phone and technically not a Ferrari. Its all about extra features at that price.

Hundreds of millions of smartphones shipped annually, leaving me wondering how much e-waste there is in the world.
