Huawei might stick to Snapdragon 888 4G for Mate 50

We are still waiting to hear more about the rumored Kirin 9000S chip.

People who kept bashing the Snapdragon 888 last year never really owned a phone that had it. These people needed validation getting a $500 or less Xiaomi phone that had Snapdragon 870.

The 888 was the far more capable chip while the 870 was more like a 865+. The 870 was not a flagship chip. Hence, why it wasn't featured in flagship phones. But being that much faster had its drawbacks with heat and throttling which the 888 had.

I personally love the 888 chip. The triple-8s are lucky in China. Not as badly named as Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. My Pixel 3 can't play GameCube all that well. Not for a long period of time. But it's a breeze for the 888 without changing much settings.

The 845 only peaks at PS2 (AetherSX2). The 888 peaks at GameCube. There is a significant jump going from PS2 to GameCube in the graphics department. There is more stutter playing Wii with 888. But I personally hate emulating the Wii due to controls.

is huawei still producing smartphones? same broken formula for years...good camera, old chipset, trash software and user experience, premium price, declining market share every year :)

Snapdragon 888 is a very capable chip. Look at the GPU boost it got compared to its flagship predecessor, 865...

      https://nanoreview.net/en/soc-compare/qualcomm-snapdragon-875-vs-qualcomm-snapdragon-865

Now compare 888 vs. 8+ Gen 1 found on the Fold 4 & Flip 4...

      https://nanoreview.net/en/soc-compare/snapdragon-8-plus-gen-1-vs-qualcomm-snapdragon-875

The 888 was badly maligned but it's GPU was 840 MHz over the 865's 587 MHz. That's 253 MHz difference while Snap8+ Gen 1 is only 60 MHz more. And 888 was 165 MHz faster than the 870.

The 888's "overheating" was overblown. Samsung actually underclocked it on their own phones. This wasn't like the 810 debacle in 2015 that jad HTC One M9 being sold less than M8 a few years later. The 888 is still a very capable SoC that has this bogus reputation of being an oven.

When an SoC gets faster like that, of course battery efficiency will suffer. It's a tough balancing act making it that much faster while still maintaining efficiency. It's like speeding up a car and expecting it won't kill gas as much. Check TechUtopia who tests ROMs. He praised the 888 for being 30% faster than the 865 when emulating GameCube.

The only times I felt Qualcomm nailed both higher performance gains with high efficiency were with the Snapdragon 800/800 AB/801 in late-2013 through 2014 and 835 in 2017. Since the 845, Qualcomm stopped caring about efficiency. They'll make it faster but won't make them as efficient.

Snap8+ is only correcting the mess of the Snap8 which overheated worse than the 888. But the gains going from 888 to Snap8+ aren't as big as going from 865/870 to 888. Hence, why I'm not interested trading in my Flip 3 for a Flip 4 to get a 90% discount. I'm aware the Snap8+ isn't that much better except battery life.

Snapdragon 888 made retro gaming emulation fun for me that no other chip before it did. I'd buy a Oppo Find N featuring this chip if priced under $500. Such a maligned but underrated chip.

Huawei will return to the 5G smartphone market in 2023. Consumers should wait or look elsewhere

Aierlan, 15 Aug 2022Don't know if mediatek would agree to make a custom 4g... morehuawei wont even go forward to 5g. they would still stuck in 4g even if the network stopped operating in far future.

I think they would also need a licence to supply them even with 4g chips due to the use of US tech. As far as I know Qualcomm applied for a licence to supply them

                  I doubt it.
They most likely will release it under honor and have 5g.

Will be buying the pro edition of this phone. Love the p series and mate series. They will be supplying a 5g case so it doesn't really matter.
