you have to suffer, 26 Aug 2022it would priced more than a conventional dslr with full set... moreHonestly, I wouldn't mind paying a bit more on my future phone if this would be coming true.
Getting myself a mirrorless several months ago made me appreciate phone cameras even more - a dedicated camera can deliver great image quality even when capturing fast-moving objects and editing RAWs on a desktop at home is a joy, but I found many a lot of instances where I just felt too awkward to use it, or taking it out of my bag causes me to miss the exact moments I want to capture.
A smartphone is very stealthy in comparison and something that I consistently hold in my hand wherever I go, whenever it is, and I can shoot photos with them within two seconds. I can edit photos on the go if I really need to. A large sensor for the main camera is what I definitely want on my next phone, but a meaningfully long-range optical zoom would be also a nice addition.

Is it going to have more then two years of security updates? If not, people should pass on this phone. Without four or five years of updates, these days, a phone is just a rip off.

but i already started scouting for new phone to replace.
https://www.gsmarena.com/sony_xperia_1-reviews-9543.php#6568501
i was specifically looking for,
1. non china brand,
2. long term software support (security, not upgrade).
i just closed down on Samsung Galaxy A53 within the following week.
both Asus(Taiwan) & Sony(Japan) has very good hardware but rubbish support.
While my Mi A1 is still working fine, it has stopped receiving security patch since Aug 2020.
I'm keeping close tab on monthly android security patch bulletin and the level of vulnerability and risk is at severely unacceptable level.
Android has increased their security with accessibility limitation which is not enforced on older phones.
Most of the report banking scam/ fraud/ hack in Malaysia(reports im monitoring) has to do with old android with rogue apps(not sideloaded, but available in google play store) that are detected too late and removed. they easily hijack your SMS service, OTP code, communication for banking purpose and QR scanning for payments.
A secured android build (security patch) with e-hygiene can withstand attacks from compromised apps, service providers and data leaks. I'm not going to regret my Galaxy A53 as my moderate use and reliance of ewallet/ mobile banking can last my phone 4years+ and i hope Samsung keeps their promise of 5 years of security update.
"You can still daily drive a MK I Xperia 1 till prolly 2025 without any issue."
- good luck with your driving.

I don't know why this is funny to you, but it's perfectly reasonable to presume that the optical zoom module will come to their phones next year especially when Sony managed to implement a similar solution.

Anonymous, 26 Aug 2022None of the current quadbayer can even achieve mere 15ms at... more"Crap HM3 is 30ms@12MP, what a failure"
1. HM3 isn't Quad Bayer,
2. You're mistaking it for HM1, which is already over 2 years old. Nobody knows how fast it takes for HM3 to read out the entire sensor area in 12MP mode.
OM-1's 20MP (which is in fact 80MP Quad Bayer with omnidirectional PDAF) sensor has a readout speed of 8ms. Splitting pixels won't affect the readout speed as long as there's an additional readout circuit dedicated to binned output added to the sensor, and the fast pixel readout can be achieved as long as it's a stacked sensor.
"Attempt of reading pixels at different EVs, will always impact speed"
Apart from Asus Smartphone for Snapdragon Insiders, I've yet to see any phone that actually uses the split exposure readout mode of a Quad Bayer sensor. Many phones rather use staggered HDR while a few others (like Mi 11 Ultra or Mi 10 Ultra) use dual gains to widen the dynamic range.

IMX650 is a 40MP RYYB Quad Pixel sensor found on the P30 series, why would you crop it to 12MP lol.

Well, Sony mobile IS a small branch. Sony, the company as a whole, doesn't need its mobile division to keep going.
I guess they just want to, which is also how they can affford to do whatever the hell they want with their new devices, regardless of other competitors devices that so desperately try to fit-in.
I like that.
Honestly, the update situation on Android is more of a "If it's not broken don't fix it" than "update ASAP at any cost or the device will fall apart". You can still daily drive a MK I Xperia 1 till prolly 2025 without any issue.
Good luck with your Fairphone. Durable as hell for sure but at what cost ?

Lets milk our loyal customers who prefer us instead of Samsung and Apple by making way more expensive phones with worse software support.
No wonder Sony isnt even selling in their homeland Japan.
I really like both the Xperia 1 and 5 phones, but hate how Sony treats them and us.

Facts you need to know:
Pro-i is not gonna get replaced any soon.
Maybe the Pro gets mark 2 next year.
No plans for flex screen in 2023/2024 (nor using rollable tech they sold to LG in 2012)

Can Sony support their devices for that long or even longer? Yes.. Is it a profitable decision to do so when their phone department not making target profits? Most probably no.. Will that make me or others who care where they put their money get a Sony phone? Certainly not,etc...
Does anyone keep their phones for 5 years? Yes, IRL not everyone is happy to spend that much money on a new device every 2/3 years, they only change phones when it break down. Readers on this site are the exception.
My point is, if you are asking for the same price tag as others (in this case Samsung) , you better better provide the same level of service.
The argument that they don't have the resources is nonsense. For example Fairphones a small company in comparison provide 5 years of support).
My next phone was going to be a fairphone since non other provided the same period of support, and iPhone was an option but I invested too much in Android, but eventually Samsung updated the software policy, sooo.
Don't give excuses for a multi-million company, you should demand a better products. Except if you're a shareholder then that's another story.
I skipped a lot of points since I don't want this reply to be any longer, but Sony had more than enough chances to fix their business modules.
