Mostly because vanilla ones are basically renamed iPhone 13. iPhone 14 Pro models however are a "preview" of iPhone's future. It's what we'll have for a while now. I just hope poor sales of vanilla models will be an indication that pricing is totally absurd in Europe and that it really doesn't bring anything new to the table.

In total, iPhone 14 (pro and non-pro models) will sell less than iPhone 13 models. It'll be a mediocre year for Apple. Pre-orders tell little, what matters is the demand through the weeks and months ahead.
I mean it's no surprise, Apple in the last years has been very slightly updating it's iPhones and the prices are going up and the economy is bad. So, people will buy less.

I don't get why they didn't price plus model at 799 and regular one at 699 as last year's mini with $200 price gap from pro model. I guess plus model will just serve as motivation for customers to go for pro models.

But Tim Cook‘s Apple won’t do that because upselling $200 from 14 to 14 Pro (without third lens and matte back and glossy frame, and now even new notch) is easier than upselling $100 from 13 Pro to 14 Pro (only new notch), and the margin on 14 is bigger than on 13 Pro. He rather has a more complicated lineup that brings better profit than a simpler lineup that is easier to understand.

well, 14 Plus is basically worse 13 Pro Max, which right now costs about 80 USD more in my country, so its better to buy 13 Pro Max and get better cameras and 120hz display (and better color versions).

I‘ve only heard one person who specifically bought the S22 Ultra because of the big display and stylus as her eyes are rapidly getting worse, but I know many more who‘d prefer their phone to be 6.1 inch or smaller with the highest end specs (including battery life).

LoL 🤣🤣 if I want bigger iPhone, I'll go with Pro Max. But I'm not. I only going to buy 6.5 inch below. Let this be a lesson for Apple that people want compact size phone. I'll bet iPhone 15 will have Mini version back 😎

The 14 (read as 13) is already a perfect iPhone for most people. Great cameras + decent screen size + great battery life, etc. Spending an extra $100 just for bigger battery and display is definitely a dumb move. Might as well spend another $100 for a HRR and brighter display, MUCH better cameras, faster chip, AOD, new design (+ dynamic island) and many more. Had they put a larger price gap between the plus and pro, I'm sure the plus will be able to at least sell better than its current condition

This looks like something Apple would celebrate, actually. They crippled their vanilla flagships so much to upsell their Pro variants and it seems to be working. And like with every other trend that is not beneficial to end users, I can totally see other brands adopting this strategy as well.

Anonymous, 12 Sep 2022Last interesting iphone was the 1st generation. Now you're just making things up. First generation was exciting because it was while new concept for a lot of things. iPhone 4 was revolution because it just outdid everyone with hard specs. iPhone X was huge because of full display without any dedicated physical or on screen buttons and amazing FaceID. And I'd say Pro versions of iPhone 14 are quite significant again, with the new pill punch hole, sorry, "Dynamic Island" and quite significant spec upgrades. They had several outstanding models. Maybe not by throwing specs up front like the rest, but as complete package. There were models that were standing out significantly.

That's to be expected. Vanilla iPhones just don't represent any upgrade value to anyone. If someone didn't upgrade to iPhone 13, they wouldn't to 14 either since they are the same. Paying full price just for Photonic Engine and Satellite thing just isn't worth it and that particularly applies for Europe where price was jacked up and we don't even have the satellite thing as option.
The way they did this year's release, they should just keep iPhone 13, discount it a bit and not even bother re-releasing it as 14, just new iPhone 14 Pro models. And then with iPhone 15, release both again. I wouldn't mind that, but current way they did it feels lazy and greedy. And it's weird saying that for Apple, but it's exactly that.
