Flashback: breaking through the 60Hz barrier

16 October 2022
After the Nokia N-Gage and Xperia Play failed, there wasn't much market for gaming phones. Things changed, however, and now gaming phones are pushing the limits of display tech.

Do you even realize how massive 6 years is when it comes to tech? We went from the launch of the very first iPhone, to phones as good as the Galaxy Note 3 in that time frame.

Now we've gone from pop-up cameras, flipping cameras, sliding displays, and all sorts of other cool new tech to solve the display intrusions, to nothing? The only manufacturer to continue releasing innovative phones is ZTE. Excluding foldables. (Though the clamshell foldables are pointless. Only the notebook style ones and trifolds make sense.)

The actual US price of the Oneplus 12 is 799 for 256gb, and 899 for 512 gb. Prices have definitely increased, but you should consider that inflation exists.

And it didn't have a filthy hole in the display.

I think OnePlus was really the one who got the ball rolling. It's a shame the 7 Pro was their last properly good phone.

Vegetaholic, 17 Oct 2022Most useless feature in a modern phone. First of all there ... more"There is literally no difference between 60hz or 120hz."

But the thing is... It's a big difference. With 60 Hz your display is basically skipping frames (display can't refresh fast enough to catch up, so for example gaming is horrible at 60 FPS), makes any scrolling choppy as a result. 120 Hz is also a bit slow-ish, but still fast enough to make movement appear smooth. 60 is too slow, that's just how it is. 90 is the bare minimum for any kind of smoothness.

user experience is better with more battery life. so,disabling 120Hz right away makes a huge difference. difference in smoothness is there but,it is negligible. I don't play games. gaming addicts always want more.

I must be blind, but I really cannot spot a relevant difference between 60Hz and higher refresh rates. Maybe something is wrong with my eyes.

Most useless feature in a modern phone. First of all there is no gaming on phones its just not practical evwn if you want to game there is no games which can take any advantage of HRR because they all suck, secondly there is litteraly no difference between 60hz or 120hz. So yeah Marketing machines doing their jobs and zombies keep following them 😀

Still have my Razor phone 😁

I think its all about what you do the most in the end.

If you're an online or even offline gamer, no doubt 120+Hz will help.
If all you do is movie watching, you might not like it but you're ok on 60Hz as well.
User Interface and all, you can enjoy upto a time, not forever.

But a big debate is that, even HRR screens can be set to work on 60Hz, so why not give customer the choice? So, HRR's kind of win the debate in the end.

But then comes the big point:- Many companies hesitate to give anything more than FullHD with HRR's, considering mobile GPU's and batteries.
Galaxy S7 had /QHD AMOLED in 2016, remember? So, why not now? With 90Hz?
I think companies should give QHD and 4K screens with HRR, program them efficiently so that they do only 75Hz in FullHD at Desktop, and then clever VRR software should scale up as & when its diserable.

To conclude, I think this VRR software should get more intelligent, but also user customisable app-wise. That would be great.
