Flashback: breaking through the 60Hz barrier

16 October 2022
After the Nokia N-Gage and Xperia Play failed, there wasn't much market for gaming phones. Things changed, however, and now gaming phones are pushing the limits of display tech.

Sort by:

I think OnePlus was really the one who got the ball rolling. It's a shame the 7 Pro was their last properly good phone.

Vegetaholic, 17 Oct 2022Most useless feature in a modern phone. First of all there ... more"There is literally no difference between 60hz or 120hz."

But the thing is... It's a big difference. With 60 Hz your display is basically skipping frames (display can't refresh fast enough to catch up, so for example gaming is horrible at 60 FPS), makes any scrolling choppy as a result. 120 Hz is also a bit slow-ish, but still fast enough to make movement appear smooth. 60 is too slow, that's just how it is. 90 is the bare minimum for any kind of smoothness.

user experience is better with more battery life. so,disabling 120Hz right away makes a huge difference. difference in smoothness is there but,it is negligible. I don't play games. gaming addicts always want more.

I must be blind, but I really cannot spot a relevant difference between 60Hz and higher refresh rates. Maybe something is wrong with my eyes.

Most useless feature in a modern phone. First of all there is no gaming on phones its just not practical evwn if you want to game there is no games which can take any advantage of HRR because they all suck, secondly there is litteraly no difference between 60hz or 120hz. So yeah Marketing machines doing their jobs and zombies keep following them 😀

Still have my Razor phone 😁

I think its all about what you do the most in the end.

If you're an online or even offline gamer, no doubt 120+Hz will help.
If all you do is movie watching, you might not like it but you're ok on 60Hz as well.
User Interface and all, you can enjoy upto a time, not forever.

But a big debate is that, even HRR screens can be set to work on 60Hz, so why not give customer the choice? So, HRR's kind of win the debate in the end.

But then comes the big point:- Many companies hesitate to give anything more than FullHD with HRR's, considering mobile GPU's and batteries.
Galaxy S7 had /QHD AMOLED in 2016, remember? So, why not now? With 90Hz?
I think companies should give QHD and 4K screens with HRR, program them efficiently so that they do only 75Hz in FullHD at Desktop, and then clever VRR software should scale up as & when its diserable.

To conclude, I think this VRR software should get more intelligent, but also user customisable app-wise. That would be great.

Well that so called always on display is one of worst features phones could ever get.
For example gluing 20 screen protectors a day for my customers and until phone is not turned off it always turn on the screen when i touch it.
When screen is bright i cant clearly see dust, depris and other residues and gluing a screen protector on a dirty screen makes no sense.

We in children time had gray and color anolog TV. they broke a lot. Cheap compared to today TV. Today displays piksels chainges colors slow. Less resulotion gives more frames per second, less electricity used in computer.

AnonD-1037771, 17 Oct 2022I can totally understand the benefits of higher refresh rat... more1-Less strain on your eyes
                                    2-Helps with gaming precision
3-Just like 8k, and arguably 4k, a display with more than 144hz is a gimmick that almost no one will be able to tell the difference for. (4k might be noticeably nicer than FHD but you need specialized screens and videos for that matter to capture its full potential. The average user does not really have that, they just think they do)

Combine the nice high res you speak of with a decent refresh rate you have a smooth, untainted visual experience for both gaming and watching.
