Apple is bringing a proper battery-saving mode to watchOS 9

19 November 2022
The new mode offers lot more than just performance reduction.

sa11oum, 21 Nov 2022I think there's a lot wrong with you actually for dism... moreI think, anyone with common sense know that a watch that can easily be pushed to five days of light usage will not drain in less than a day no matter how hard you try.

That is how I know you're a liar. Sorry, Apple spokesperson. Well, same thing, different title.

AnonD-762416, 19 Nov 2022That is at least the lie spammed on all the gadget blogs. ... moreWell no, at least as far as sensor accuracy is concerned. Unless you can offer an articulated rebuttal of the findings from say the ‘quantified scientist’ youtube channel, where the guy quite definitively demonstrates that in terms of sensor accuracy, the Apple Watch is a market leader. My own problem with the Apple Watch isn’t how good it is at what it does, it’s how little time it can actually do it.

Oh and when I say an articulated rebuttal, I don’t mean your usual ‘it’s a lie’ conspiracy nonsense you seem so fond of levelling against anyone not sharing your opinions.

sa11oum, 21 Nov 2022I can understand everyone leads a different life with diffe... moreSure, but that kind of contradicts all the noise Apple have been making about sleep tracking now doesn’t it? I mean how exactly are you, or Apple for that matter, expecting the Watch to track your sleep from a bedside table? Well I guess you could enable this power saving mode….oh wait, except that disables most of the sensors required in order to track sleep with any degree of accuracy.

And my issue with having to charge a smart watch every day is, I simply don’t have to. There are alternatives out there that offer all the features I need and last days sometimes weeks between charges. I don’t want a second smartphone wannabe that I have to strap to my wrist and whose battery life I have to manage on the daily. So instead it’s the Sense for me, I get my notifications and all the relevant health data is tracked, and I only have to charge it once a week.

It’s to each their own like you said, to me though a health centric wearable whose health monitoring features have to be disabled in order to extend battery life is a fundamental contradiction in functionality

sa11oum, 21 Nov 2022I can understand everyone leads a different life with diffe... moreI think he is looking at recording sleep activity. Even with 18hrs, you still need to take off when you sleep..

Basically for people who use Apple Watch since the start, they have 2 or more watches already. It will merge your data automatically.

For example I have series 3 and series 8 now. I use series 3 to track sleep, series 8 for daily use.

DaFink, 21 Nov 2022I find it ironic that you have to enable a battery saving m... moreI can understand everyone leads a different life with different circumstances, but for the life of me it still puzzles me when people have an issue with having to charge a device every night. We all sleep and have bedside tables I assume? As long as the device lasts 18 hours, as you're saying, what might be the problem?

I find it ironic that you have to enable a battery saving mode, that disables pretty much all the functionality you would require a wearable for in order to get battery life equivalent to something like a Fitbit Sense with all of its features fully enabled.

And before anyone starts, yes I know a Sense isn’t as ‘Smart’ as an Apple Watch. For me though that is a good thing, I don’t want something strapped to my wrist that is trying to be a second smartphone, and only lasting ‘up to 18 hours’ as a result. I want something that is trying to be what a wearable should be for several days at a time, that is all the health related features coupled with the ability to triage notifications on the go.

This is why I have never gotten along with any of the Apple Watches I have tried over the years.

Just like how everyone claims regular Apple Watch can't last a full 24 hours day. I have Apple Watch 5 which I only charged to 80% and it lasted me actual full day easily. Granted, without any use of GPS because I didn't need it except few times when going on random biking, but it did in fact last that long. It's hilarious how you people here on GSMArena keep dismissing ACTUAL experience of users with the actual damn products. Like, wtf?

Nothing beats Apple watch. Thats not because Apple was fast, or innovative.. they are given years to perfect the OS.

But rather Apple's rival is slow and indecisive. Samsung flip flop around Taizen OS.. Google back and forth their WearOS... without reference example build for other watch makers.

Now with Google finally getting their acts together.. they are years behind Apple watch..

You g... moreYeah, not my fault if all reviewers (including GSMArena) are so lazy that they just say "It has AOD" and not tell what kind of AOD, how it works or how it behaves. Not only that, not even users know things when you ask them. I've asked for Xiaomi Smart Band 7 Pro if it has same active and AOD faces and people said YES. Turns out out of 150 watch faces, only few have identical but blacked out watch faces (literally few!). The rest just have some useless generic AOD watch faces. I've seen same nonsense on Amazfit watches and it took me crawling through several Youtube videos to find that Galaxy Watch 5 does have same AOD as Apple Watch 5 or newer. Even "tutorials" how to enable AOD on Galaxy Watch just show how and then don't show the results. WTF? Meanwhile for Apple Watch, literally TONS of showcase. Hell, I didn't even think about it when Apple announced AOD mode. They weren't the first, but they did it properly the very first time. So, yeah, blame everyone else if I have trust issues when info on AOD is so damn lacking.

Yes. You get the freedom of developer created watch faces on your Galaxy Watch.

It is YOUR choice to pick one that uses a minimalist AOD or an AOD that keeps everything visible.

Get out of your Apple reality distortion field. Enjoy real innovation and freedom with a Galaxy Watch.

Well, if you enable everything on the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro.

The massive difference is what you get when a company genuinely bothers to put modern hardware into that 600 buck watch.
