Apple announces the Oceanic+ app that makes the Apple Watch Ultra into a diving computer

28 November 2022
The app can warn divers when they are ascending too quickly and can estimate the time it takes to return to the surface.

Wow, that's straight up predatory pricing. Well, that's Apple being Apple, they do the same with their storage options. Costs more than the Android alternatives but unlike them, you do not get more RAM aswell..

i am a certified beginner level diver and I can say that upto 20m is for upto intermediate level divers. they generally don't dive without an instructor. beginner or intermediate divers don't use advanced equipment like diving computers. apple watch ultra can appeal those people who would like to use their daily wearable also be useful for their hobby. more advanced proffessionals/instructors, who can dive deeper, will keep relying on their diving computers with advanced features, sensors and physical buttons, not a touch screen apple watch.

Anonymous, 29 Nov 2022Yes we will complain. If you want to be gauged that's ... morePuuh, this discussion has gotten so out of hand by troll narratives that have nothing to do with diving, nor the device's capabilities.

So, here's a try: 40m is an insufficient safety margin for AOWD dives and I'm not sold on using a single exposed wheel button that might catch sand or be too fiddly to use with heavy neoprene or even drysuit gloves.

Talking about drysuits, we'd quickly get to cold water diving for which I'd like to see how dependable/certified the depth gauge/piezoelectric sensor is in 4°C salt water for extended time.

Many write here about wristband dive computers: I have a Mares Matrix which serves more than my needs and I have my secondary Suunto computer in my SPG, together with a mechanical compass. I take the mechanical compass over the digital one in the Matrix any, not the least because you want to carry it away from your body and it has a side window for when you hold it in front of you (which is more hydrodynamic and eases navigation).

On connectivity: For multiple stages, I'd consider remote air pressure sensors. But each such sensors cost as much as an Apple Watch and the computer (we're into console territory now) has prices in the iPhone Pro range. None of the manufacturers have a usage subscription fee. However, you have the have both the computer and remote sensors serviced by a certified technician on regular intervals. This brings us to the last issue: Who can reliably calibrate and pressure test the sensors on the Apple Watch?

Anonymous, 29 Nov 2022This is a connected device, to use it to its full potential... moreYes we will complain. If you want to be gauged that's your problem, but don't drag others.
Also that is a false equivalence. You already pay for said connectivity, it's called "your internet fee".
There is ZERO need for the app to be subscription based as it does not relate to external factors as you said, it collects local data.

Nice try.... we are talking functions 40m below sea-level, so very unlikely that it will BE connected...

But sure some (other) functions can -at the least in theory- benefit from it being connected.

Max, 29 Nov 2022We give our info and see ads but we don't pay for it. Currency has many forms and it says a lot about how you value your time and information. Gmail and YouTube are different services that are monetized differently. You’re comparing two totally different things to make a weak point.

What do you expect? Ads while you wait to see your depth? Another ad before you get a warning that you’re deafening too quickly? Haha.

The Real hardware for diving will be able to connect with the equipment within proximity Without needing a nickle and dime subscription taint seeping into the core mechanics. No professional diver will opt for this fruit toy over actual hardware which they trust their lives with.

At the end of the day, this watch is just an overpriced toy when it comes to being a diving computer which people with more money (daddy's money / credit card- credit limit) than sense will purchase for "that future caribbean vacation" which may or may not ever happen.
